Despite being confined to the embassy while seeking safe passage to Ecuador, Assange met with Russians and world-class hackers at critical moments, frequently for hours at a time. An Ecuadorian intelligence official told CNN that the surveillance reports are authentic.
The security logs noted that Assange personally managed some of the releases "directly from the embassy" where he lived for nearly seven years. After the election, the private security company prepared an assessment of Assange's allegiances. That report, which included open-source information, concluded there was "no doubt that there is evidence" that Assange had ties to Russian intelligence agencies.
In short, even though he fled to the Ecuadorian embassy to avoid being prosecuted for rape (Sweden) and for various charges regarding releasing of classified information (United States), Assange met with Russians involved with the 2016 election interference as well as other individuals regarding other matters.
In June of 2016, Assange received 75 visitors, double the normal amount, some of whom were Russian citizens and one hacker who was outlined in Mueller's report. Immediately afterwards, in July, WikiLeaks communicates directly with various Russians asking them for more Democratic information right before Hillary solidifies her campaign. One week later, Russian hackers send to WikiLeaks a file titled, "big archive".
A few days after that, an Ecuadorian security guard abandons his post to receive a package from a man in disguise. WikiLeaks notifies the Russian hackers that it has received the files. Four days later, 20,000 internal files from the Democratic National Committee are released.
Assange continued to meet with various Russians throughout July and August, including one woman who showed up at key moments in time. Assange had meetings with this woman in the middle of the day in a conference room. In addition, Assange met five times with propagandists from the RT.
Even more interesting is in June 2016, the London bureau chief for RT met Assange and hand-delivered a USB thumb drive. This meeting was so hastily arranged and so last minute, Assange had to get special permission from the Ecuadorian ambassador.
