Aspartame was not approved until 1981, in dry foods. For over eight years the FDA refused to approve it because of the seizures and brain tumors this drug produced in lab animals. The FDA continued to refuse to approve it until President Reagan took office (a friend of Searle) and fired the FDA Commissioner who wouldn't approve it. Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes was appointed as commissioner. Even then there was so much opposition to approval that a Board of Inquiry was set up. The Board said: "Do not approve aspartame". Dr. Hayes OVERRULED his own Board of Inquiry.

Shortly after Commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., approved the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages, he left for a position with G.D. Searle's Public Relations firm.
Long-Term Damage. It appears to cause slow, silent damage in those unfortunate enough to not have immediate reactions and a reason to avoid it. It may take one year, five years, 10 years, or 40 years, but it seems to cause some reversible and some irreversible changes in health over long-term use.

METHANOL (AKA WOOD ALCOHOL/POISON) (10% OF ASPARTAME) Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. People may recall that methanol was the poison that has caused some "skid row" alcoholics to end up blind or dead. Methanol is gradually released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounter the enzyme chymotrypsin.
The absorption of methanol into the body is sped up considerably when free methanol is ingested. Free methanol is created from aspartame when it is heated to above 86 Fahrenheit (30 Centigrade). This would occur when aspartame-containing product is improperly stored or when it is heated (e.g., as part of a "food" product such as Jello).

Rest of article what are your thoughts on it

I Do know it caused damage in my right eye that cleared up when I quit drinking it, and some people say that the GulfWarSyndrome is really the diet Cokes that were stored in the desert heat.

Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol "is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic." The recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.

The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects. Due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr Woodrow C. Monte, Director of the Food Science and Nutrition Laboratory at Arizona State University, "There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol."

It has been pointed out that fruit juices and alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol. It is important to remember, that the methanol in natural products never appears alone. In every case, ethanol is present, usually in much higher amounts. Ethanol is an antidote for methanol toxicity in humans. The troops of Desert Storm were "treated" to large amounts of aspartame-sweetened beverages which had been heated to over 86 degrees F. in the Saudi Arabian sun. Many of them returned home with numerous disorders similar to what has been seen in persons who have been chemically poisoned by formaldehyde. The free methanol in the beverages may have been a contributing factor in these illnesses. Other breakdown products of aspartame such as DKP, may also have been a factor.

So, Todd, what was the point of this thread?

Damn Fluoride

Okay folks, to establish some credibility, I do not work for Searle, Monsanto, or any other corporate bogeymen. But bullshit is bullshit as the attached article from a more reputable source indicates, there is an active campaign using the internet to exploit our lack of science skepticism.

http://www.acsh.org/press/editorials/HealthHoax012899.html

But maybe ACSH is in their pockets also. Hell, they all are, the Illuminati are everywhere. Aspartame does not breakdown chemically into Methanol until temperatures approaching 180 degrees F at standard atmospheric pressures. The figure of 86 degrees F comes from a test using a platinum catalyst dispersed on UHMW Nylon, not a common substance in the human body (Thank God!). I could write a whole bunch of stuff but chalk this hysteria up with microwaving babies and Captain Kangaroo being Frank Zappa's father. Sheesh!

ACSH is a member of the international Pharmacetcuetical{sp} Cartel so yes they are in thier pockets and are programed to tell the sheeple that everything is just all right and good and nothing to be worried about. that is to make us go on and live our lives as happy little sheeple all the while our immune system are being compromised making gene specific and race specific biological weapondry all the more effective.

The New National athem

Baa baa sheeple have you any care,
No sir, no sir, there no biological warfare.
Baa baa sheeple why are your soldiers sick,
Well sir it isn't from the cherry syrup vacine to give us a kick.
Baa baa sheeple don't wory as we take away your gun,
Well sir when you come to take our children we wouldn't want to make you run.
Baa baa sheeple don't woorry our floride isn't making your children ill,
Well sir we know you can cure it with a Redilyn ill.

We the Sheeple of the United States of American do declare our mindless devotion to all you say and do, and allow you to bring in the UN to take away our property and our gunss too.

oh toddy this long distance thing is tearing me aspart

But in reality even if we lived next door to one another woould you go through with it, with me?

now now...turn this "sweet" thread into something that we dont want EVERYONE to be aspart of....you know the answer silly man....

Well, here is my Friday night. The family is asleep and I end up defending Drug Companies. This is sad but the truth must get out. ACSH is a non-profit group of over 350 scientists and they receive funding from a number of sources. They do indeed receive funding from corporations, as well as private individuals, trade groups and government grant money, but I can find no listing of their belonging to the International Pharmaceutical Cartel, if such a thing exists. They have traditionally been fairly non-biased and receive positive reviews from both liberal and conservative media.

However, for curiosity's sake, I went and looked at a whole bunch of other sites of known subversive organizations like The Mayo Clinic, American Cancer Society, Center for Disease Control, and several outfits in the UK.

Then I wandered through several anti-aspartame sites and concluded two things
1) Their science is often really weak and a sophomore level engineer or mathematician could see their very clear errors in a number of studies. The understanding of epidemiology often presented is at odds with everything learned about human biology from Hippocrates forward. Toxins, biological agents, and viruses all tend to be very specific in what damage they do. Listing over 92 different pathologies attributable to a single agent is embarrassing.
2) They have their own agenda. A couple of sites sell their own sweeteners.

Now, when all else fails, there is one true source of information, The Straight Dope, Cecil Adams' independent column. Uncle Cecil plays both sides of the field and summarized a number of studies (which are also reported on several other Medical sites) and came up with two proven issues with Aspartame that require further study (and that is ongoing). First, people suffering from Depression or taking anti-depressants need to be careful. Aspartame can be a negative for some of these folks (similar to the way a food allergy can behave) and this warning has been dispensed to doctors and should be contained on prescription warnings. Second, a small study of 13 people ended up with two people developing some conjunctivitis in their eyes. One had a partially detached retina that was probably damaged prior to the study but in such a small group it is alarming. There is further work to figure out what happened but understand that thousands of other test groups have not shown this issue so most scientists would chalk this up as coincidence but they are trying to repeat this work.

Without being an asshole intentionally and not wanting to minimize any real suffering of Gulf War vets, every year or so there is some new theory for why some folks are hurting. First it was biological weapons vaccines, then something Saddam did, now Aspartame. Call it being a sheep but the only real progress on health has come from real science and fact, not rumor mongering. Diverting precious funds from research and care to fight this nonsense is actually cruel.
