You delete DMs by selecting “Leave Conversation.” It will give you an option whether or not to allow future messages in the conversation.

Does that mean the other person is blocked, or what happens when they try to reply in that conversation (presumably the can still see it unless they've also left?)

It’s annoying, I understand. Also annoying are new accounts spamming hundreds of posts across the forum in a matter of minutes. New members are going to have to deal with some moderation at first to determine they aren’t a spambot.

Is this why my attempts at uploading an avatar pic haven't worked yet? They're waiting for approval?
I wasn't sure I'd chosen something not allowed and it was dismissed.
Do I get any notification when one is approved or do I just keep an eye on my profile?

Avatar pics are definitely moderated. When you upload one, you should see a message that indicates it is now pending moderator approval. Sometimes this is a quick process and sometimes it takes weeks. And it happens to all of us (forum moderators included). Submitting a new pic will just send you to the back of the line/queue.

Avatar pics do have to follow the forum rules, so avoid uploading anything explicit. Other than that, it’s just a matter of time until it is approved.

Hello,
New account here, each reply or post on the forums i interact with is tagged:
“This message is awaiting moderator approval, and is invisible to normal visitors.”

What is the criteria that ends this probationary moderating of new posters?
Is it post count or a settings issue?

Edit: After reading this threads previous pages i now realise its a vetting process to combat spam bots or other such things.
