Arrrr, ye scurvy seadogs! Tell us the tale of "Pirate English," true and square!

What is the origin of the English dialect pirates speak in movies? Where in England do people talk like that?

Disney is to blame!

According to my sources, Long John Silver as played by Robert Newton in the 1950 Disney production of Treasure Island was the first to use that awful accent.

As I have heard it from a few sources when he forgot his lines he used arrrggg to fill up some space. Disney liked it. Not at all based in reality.

He may have been right to use it ,a large proportion of pirates came from the West of England ,and although the dialect is disappearing it can still be found .
