"Around here, the only thing we have is our credibility."

Do any of you brilliant political analysts found here, try out your arguments on boards frequented by people that are actually knowledgeable about political discourse or it it all cut and paste from instagram?

Does Lit feel like a small pond increasing your fishy-verve?

I always thought it interesting that politics comes up at all here.

I don't get what the end-game is.

Persuasion? You think anyone changes their mind even without anti-bush or anti-obama screeds setting hackles on edge?

If it's to increase one's "credibility", hows that working?

If it is just to sharpen up ones bully-instinct...looks like most of you get an A already.

Politics come up because they are a good way to pass time. There is little difference between this board and others, once you ignore the long standing enmities between the children on this board. The same happens on nearly every other board, left leaners, hate right leaners and name calling ensues.

Interestingly, with the Biden debate in 2012, it appeared that he took his cues from Lit. Perhaps people here are not so wrong after all?

Cred is 0. A meaningless word and concept. Caring about is even more meaningless. Your 'cred' is the accuracy of your words not the direction they lean. Nobody changes their mind based on 'obama sucks' posts' but when presented with fact - they shut up (until next day when they've got new google to present as fact).

I was 'warned' that I should be careful what I say because, "Around here, the only thing we have is our credibility."

Do people on the General Board actually feel "credibility" describes the strength of their respective positions (whatever they may be) and the brilliance with which they engage in rhetorical argument with the "wrong" side (according to their respective viewpoint?)

Seriously?

I can't imagine a junior high debate team alternate would deign to engage most of us after a couple of pouty rounds.

Thoughts?

if the point is valid, does it matter who made the point?

here it gets a little high school at times. I don't like you so nothing you say is true, even if it is, so there, neener, etc.

but it's less about credibility than it is picking teams.

I was going to do this post but when I backspaced, I had already typed 4 paragraphs listing flaws, logical problems and so on, as well as the cast of characters and their chiseled in stone mannerisms and methods.

You managed it in one line.

Bite me bitch.

you know i would. repeatedly.

*smugs in your general direction*

So I got up and poured a cup of coffee and then read this fucking wordy thread and all I can say is 'whip out your tits!'

"credibility" lol. That has about as much relevance to the gb as it does to a meet market pickup bar.

Many years ago, on a Sunday morning, a whacky bat shit crazy woman we all knew, came in the ER and said, THERE'S A DEAD GUY OUTSIDE UNDER THE TREE. Uh, sure, lady!

Well, there was. It took us a few hours to check it out, but she was right.

There is such a thang as TRUTH. And much of the time we don't recognize it, becuz of whatever. No one does a Baye's Risk Equation with calculator and pencil when they see a tiger running toward them.

As a more serious response to your other observation- Don't think of Lit as a porn board or a political board, so much as a place to get things off of one's chest literally and figuratively, or hang out and let it all hang out sometimes. The origins were with porn writers and free discourse, but that appeals not only to perverts, but trolls and people banned elsewhere, political and other fringe folks of all kinds. It's evolved from there.

That's interesting... I've been around let for well over a decade, but for various reasons I needed to be a non poster. The General Board for a non posterd doesn't make for a very interesting read it all if you interact its marginal interesting at times sometimes very interesting and sometimes really stupid.

Now that you mention it I could see somebody googling this or that and I almost accidentally finding themselves in the middle of the General Board never really even realizing their prefer a little kinky places here as well...or not caring

I'm a little fascinated with that 200 meter track if guy who is basically just sort of in the corner mumbling to himself. Someone did a nice I burst okk on him and found him doing pretty much the same thing and for reasons that I couldn't tell banned from a bodybuilding forum... now he talks to himself here how he got here is probably like you say.

It's not often that the frame gets flipped on me but I'm going to be looking at my fellow posters probably a little differently maybe I need to browse the how did you get to lit thread.

I have noticed that if you simply persist and be clear that eventually they do just go away, only to come back after they reloaded.

I've tried a couple of times in different ways to encourage people to express themselves independently as a way to articulate their own independent thoughts... I don't think too many people are interested.

That was exactly my reaction when I was warned that my credibility was at stake over a particular argument where by the way I was actually write and well supported in my thinking I didn't even think it was particularly controversy love a point.

I mean for the sake of discussion let's assume I'm wrong. What is the next day I make a really good point and everybody on the place agree that I'm right... they're suddenly get a discount because I was wrong yesterday?

I've never done and done debate but I think everybody's seen them... and hasn't everybody practiced exchanging ideas their entire life? Or is this the first time some of these people of run into someone who disagrees with them?

I made the mistake once of sending a private message to some girl who among other interest you listed was discussing politics. I didn't even bring up politics she did. As soon as she found out I was a non liberal she wanted to know why I would be a really want to be a racist.

The really stupid thing was about a year and a half on another thread I bumped into her forgot it was THAT chick, and went through the whole thing again!
...

Shrug.

And the last dude I forgot to quote it but no this is not a wordy thread. Its a normal thread with an overly verbose poster as your most kind and gracious host.

I don't really have any sympathy for people that have openly declared that they're quite a bit smarter than me but cant seem to manage a couple of pages a minute of this sort of light fare.

Reading the unintelligible tangled snarl above Now that I'm back on my so-called smartphone makes me think that perhaps an hour's tutorial was Sean might save me hours of my life. I have noticed that if I talk like a robot it is more precise in its apparent ability to read my diction.

Maybe it just doesn't like American Western drawl.

Read him. He has 'GB cred' as an even minded, well balanced poster who sticks to fact.

We might as well come out and say it: GB Cred is actually determined by a small select group of long time poasters known only as "The Wise", according to some complex formula laid down in antiquity.

one of 'The Wise'

<<< not one of them.

Some people feel this way here and in reality. That reputation is all you have.

I think truth is truth and if I'm wrong 98% of the time and I'm right 2% of the time, that's what's real.

It is of importance to me as a measuring stick, because if people think I'm 100% wrong all the time and can't acknowledge the 2% when I might be right...that's good information to know.

It is good to know that people think that way and to realize that some people are binary. They like you and agree with you or they dislike you and disagree with you.

I prefer to talk to the people that can discern the percentages and deal with me on those terms.

So over time I can talk to the people that are honest and deal with the topic and not with the personality differences.

What we really have are opinions and ideas and thoughts. It's credible that I have those opinions and ideas and thoughts.

it's 93%.

Gotta love precision in numbers.

@recidiva I think I look at it the same way you do but from the other side what percentage of the time are they sure they are right not even just with me but with everyone.

I don't know what your opinions are but since I'm right approximately 93 to 98 percent of the time we are probably on polar opposites of every issue

I can disagree with you 100% of the time and still potentially like you. I can agree with you 100% of the time and still potentially dislike you.

If you're here for people to be nice to you and agree with you all the time, the reputation thing probably matters. I'm not, so it doesn't except to separate the people I can talk to reliably without ugliness from the ones I can't.

Fuck you, bitch, I never liked you.

Wait. . . that was a compliment! I gave you 5% just like that - assuming that your every utterance concerning gaming and fantasy literature is correct.

that query guy otoh, you should reserve a special place in snark towards.

I only deserve 2% bonus, tops. Generosity does not become you.

what would become me is a new keyboard, this one has death of old age imminent written all over it.

It could also be the piece of lettuce from my wrap that I just pulled out from under the 'TY' keys.

Perhaps your recent of correctness about LOTR had a greater effect on the numbers than the spreadsheet's program design could cover.

Dammit, I hate it when I'm right about something entirely subjective. Throws off the calculations. I should have two spreadsheets.

Naw...never go anywhere expecting or desiring adoration, although as of late on self reflection that I have discerned that my being a stray kitten as I call them magnet, is probably some subconscious validation seeking.
