Fear of being without your phone is on the rise

"Nomophobia," the fear of being without your phone, is now a real phobia and the number of people suffering from it is on the rise, NBC News reports, citing a poll of 1,000 people in the United Kingdom. Sixty-six percent of respondents reported being nomophobic, up from 53 percent four years ago.

I only get that way if I don't have my ... um, my pocket knife... yeah. Then I gets a bit crazy.

No, but I think my husband is nomophobic by proxy. He hates it when I go out without mine.

Oh hell no. I hate the damned thing (even if it does also function as an e-reader). The only time I have to have it is when I'm out and my girls aren't home. That's an entirely different kind of phobia.

I'm probably the worst for remembering my phone. Its always stashed at the bottom of my purse but its always on silent so I never answer it. I forgot to charge it for a few weeks and didn't even notice.

There's a similar thread in AH that I responded to...when I read this one I thought half the comments had been wiped out and I couldn't figure out why, lol. Too much nuking of threads lately made me assume...oh, well, you know what happens when you assume. Anyway, I always, always must have my phone. But I rarely answer it. I just want the security of being able to make a call if I need to. I'm out in the boondocks every night for my job. Am I still a nomophobe??

no. i had a phone in the house when i was married. then my ex wanted me to have a cell. i accepted it just to shut her up. i had it for about 8 months, and then threw it in the trash in april 2009 (some months after i left her). didn't have one of any kind until i got this job in late april 2010. it is a home phone. and it is just there to go with the job. i rarely use it. most of the time it is not even hooked up because the comp needs the line. get another cell? never. i even ask anyone coming here to turn off their phone at least a mile away and take out their sim card.
this place used to get no cell service at all, but a recent tower being put up some miles away gives it 1 bar of service.

Jesus Christ. Did you know that Ivan left his wife? Huh? If not he'll remind you every other post.

As for me, I always carry my phone but I don't always answer it. At dinner it gets stashed in the car or elsewhere. I will stash it when I'm on dates. And unless I want the Pandora capabilities I will leave it in the car during my minion's activities.

No, I don't even own a cell phone. However, I do use hubby's from time to time for calls or to browse the web.

I understand being tied to your phone if your job 'requires' it or your children may need to reach you .... however, I can't understand teenagers (and others) who just can't live without their phones.

I upgraded to a fancy smart phone last fall. I don't need it but it does make some things convenient. I'm fine without it.
