Are hot dogs falling in popularity?

I just seem to notice they don't seem to be terribly common food anymore. I don't see a lot of hot dog ads on TV, and I don't hear people eating them a lot anymore. When I go to events I see about ten thousand other foods, and almost no one with a hot dog. You think they are going out of style? That America no longer wants it's tube of processed meat byproducts and has moved on to trendier fare?

One of these days, I'll think of a serious topic. I swear.

I think the answer to your problem might have something to do with the fact that hotdogs are an "inferior good". what I mean is that hotdogs are generally considered something that you buy and eat if you don't have a lot of money. Hotdogs are cheap and plentiful.

As a college student I can buy 8 hotdogs and 8 buns for $3. It's a beautilful investment at the time, but the trick with inferior goods is that you buy less of them as your income increases. If I had lots and lots of money I seriously doubt I'd be eating hotdogs nearly as often. I rarely ate any hotdogs growing up, and I doubt if I ever get married that my wife would look favorably if I fed the family with that quality of food very often.

They are falling in popularity, yes.

They are full of fat and all sorts of nasty things. I grew up on hot dogs and now, give them to my kids when I need a quick meal.

They aren't the american staple they used to be.

Which is odd considering the hamburger remains so. Hambugers support several major fast food chains and do remain an american staple, even though the beef can be just as harmful (fatty and full of chemicals).

Gamelover certainly has a point. I believ rice and most forms of potatoes save french fries are also not terribly popular.

I think so, everyone is concerned about what they put in them.

I've been hearing a cheesey commercial on the radio lately. It's basic message is "Ask not what the hot dog is made of, ask what you are made of. America is a blend of many spices and tastes, as is the hot dog." Cheez-ey!

I still like hot dogs though, and I'll probably always eat them.

What giggles said...

And hot dogs are "chic" anymore. A lot of people are realizing you dont need meat to have a good time. Tons of people willl grill veggie burgers this weekend for instance.

Also, hot dogs are too readily available. Years ago the only time people had hot dogs was when they passed an urban street vendor or when they went to a baseball game. Now they are in every grocery store.

Not in my family. We love Nathans. With chili, cheese and onions, or just plain with ketchup and relish.

Damn, now I'm hungry.

I just thought I'd add a funny comment. One time I went to a friend's birthday party and we had a hotdog and chips meal. The birthday-boy made the remark to me, "Would you like some hotdog with that katchup"?

Needless to say, I think I sometimes add more toppings to my food than most people. I think the best thing about some foods is what you put on them, and the foods you use are sometimes interchangable...*drools over chicken strips*

It's odd. I seem to prefer my food "pure" that is, without a lot condiments. Just ketchup or steak sauce for burgers and hot dogs, and fries I eat entirely by themselves. I also ingnore totally any dipping sauces given to me at restaurants.

Condiments have their place. If it's really good food we're talking about, prime steak or fish, just a little fresh seasonings will do, but when we're talking processed meat foods, I like the works on top.

Did I mention that I'm hungry?

I don't eat hotdogs very much these days. I usually eat some sort of vegetables and such. Or a sandwich, depending on my cooking laziness at the moment.

Ruby, if you are hungry, you could always eat my hotdog... :p

Poor dear. You need someone to feed you some sweet succulent morsel, or possibly just present you with a large steaming plate of something delicious and allow yourself to wallow. I know I would certainly enjoy that.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

As long as there are buns to put around them, there will always be hotdogs. :p
