Are Advertisers crazy?

I think they must be.

I just watched back to back episodes of Rides, TLC's new series about Hotrods and custom cars -- Definitely a "boys' Toys" kind of show.

So why were a quarter of the commercials for three different brands of mascara, five or six "girly" shampoos and conditioners, and the birth-control patch?

The advertisers can't have chosen the timing of those commercials according to TLC's programming; if they did they don't know anything about who they're aiming their products at.

Sounds a bit like the feminine hygiene adverts that are played through the 6 o'clock news.

Like, I mean, who really watches the news these days?

Actually... the kids have to for their current events homework.

"Mummy, what's that cat doing chasing one of those Libra tampons across the floor?"

Couple of days ago there was a 1970 film on UK TV called "Lust for a Vampire". The title says it all. Just in case you missed the point, the first ad in the first break was asking for blood donors!

Harold, I watched it too, they put the ads on during the show because of the women sitting beside the man that takes up half the sofa.

He wont give up the controller, there for putting their ads anywhere else would be a waste of money. If we want to relax, put our feet up, we have to watch what they want, best spot for girly ads Id say!

Now if the ads were in the middle of a Nascar race or the Superbowl that would be a hoot!

I have the feeling Harold that TLC, Discovery, the history channel and other informative channels probably have a more limited viewership than say Fox or Mtv. In all likelihood the commercials for girly products air during shows that appeal more to women.

It is just a guess, but from what I do watch of the history channel it seems their advertising is pretty limited in scope. You see the same ads across time slots and themed shows. I would be willing to guess here that the same Mascara & shampoo comercials you saw during a boy's toy's show air pretty much regularly across the channel's programing schedule, reguarless of what show is slated to be on.

No, I watch a lot of TLC, Discovery and History Channel, and that's what made this particular batch of commercials so noticeable -- they were out of character for the channel and for the particular show. Advertsing on the "specialty channels" is usually more closely targeted to match the demographics than it is on the channels with broader target audiences.

The misplaced commercials might have been "local" commercials, but they were in both showings (Prime Time and Late night repeats.)

My personal favorite for "out of context" is the woman that plugs a hole in a rowboat (on a romantic row with a guy) with a tampon. Wha...aat?
