Laboratory tests on cats rise 26 per cent in a decade

Campaigners PETA have accused the government of "another broken promise" for failing to tackle the issue.

Figures released by the Home Office show the number of animals used for medical or cosmetic research rose to almost 70,000 last year - more than 3.79 million procedures, a rise of two per cent from 2010.

The numbers were 40 per cent up on the year 2000, mostly due to breeding genetically engineered animals.

The figures showed increases in procedure numbers for several animal species.

Tests involving cats were up 26 per cent, pigs 37 per cent, birds 14 per cent and fish 15 per cent.

Testing of rats was down by 11 per cent, guinea pigs by 16 per cent and dogs by 21 per cent.

Policy advisor for PETA UK Alistair Currie said: "These figures show that the need for an informed public debate has never been greater.

"Statistics can't tell us what happened to the cats and other animals and they can't reveal the suffering animals endure in laboratories.
