Does someone have a tool that spiders CHYOO and saves the threads? Having just lost a major story (for me -- Population Crisis) I want to preserve others to escape a similar fate.

In the meantime, I suggest that everything you've submitted in the past month should get archived by hand. They might restore the database to a backup at any moment.

Why would they do that? And who the fuck are "they", I thought we were relatively free of interference from outside people.

Well, I don't know what happened but an entire story went poof this weekend, one with hundreds of threads: Population Crisis. I had 13 threads in there that, though they are not lost, since I write them off CHYOO and save them, now have no context.

One way of fixing this problem would be to restore backups. I have no idea how often they backup the server.

"They" being Manu and whoever else is in charge of the CHYOO servers.

BTW, this happened a couple years ago. Something went wrong and they restored from two week old backups in a period when I was adding 1-2 threads a day.

Damn, that's going to be a tall order then... I've got two hundred odd threads, none of which are backed up... that's not gonna be a fun job...

Just start slow. I keep mine on a private wiki off my website. Makes it private, and easily works like CHYOO with links to the next and previous threads. Google Docs is good too. Both those methods make them backed up and much more disk crash resistant.

I highly recommend writing offline and cutting and pasting in chyoo.com. The Add Thread pages time out after 30 minutes or so, and then you lose what you just wrote. Then it's easy to keep them archived.

I use a wiki and Google Docs.

Yeah I already write my stuff off-line but I don't (rather stupidly) make a copy of any of it, I just copy and paste what I write into Chyoo and move onto the next thread.

If the server being reverted is a real possibility, then I think I might hold off on writing anything new for awhile.

I could be totally wrong. I just wish I knew where Population Crisis went.

Does the person who did CHYOO3 still have archives of the old Population Crisis? Maybe we could rebuild it.

Maybe we could rebuild it.

We have the technology.

While it's nice of you to be so proactive, I'm just a little surprised that "they" haven't told you what exactly it is that's going on.

Do you know any kind of time frame for the server reverting to the back-up? I only ask because I've got itchy typing fingers and like GoodBoy, I'd rather not risk loosing a load of good work due to a server reset.

I have no idea if they ever will. Just post them and keep them offline.
