CHICAGO – Hummus is too fatty, pretzels are too salty. Even hard-boiled eggs and yogurt don’t make the cut.

Those restrictions and others imposed on schools through the revamped “healthier” National School Lunch Program convinced officials in Illinois’ second largest school district to forfeit nearly $1 million in federal lunch aid to serve students food they want to eat, rather than what the government tells them to, CBS reports.

“So far so good. The meals, as you’ve seen, look fantastic, and there’s a lot of excitement,” District 214 Associate Superintendent Cathy Johnson told the news station as officials recently unveiled their new menu.

The federal “healthier” school lunch overhaul, championed by First Lady Michelle Obama, has been a boondoggle for public schools across the country. The tightened restrictions, intended to combat childhood obesity, have driven more than 1 million students away from school lunches and created over $1 billion per year in food waste since they were implemented in 2012.

That's a shame. She was just trying to tell everyone how to live their lives. Whats wrong with that ???

Kids want pizza and french fries. Whats new.

It's a great idea that will take time to get used too.

Plus....she's black. Get over it.

Kinda funny that the same people who want the government to dictate what people can buy with their food stamps are outraged about the government telling school districts what they can buy with school lunch money.

It appears that the schools gave it two years and are dumping the programs.

Guess they're not waiting to "get used to it."

I doubt the kids aren't eating it because she's black. They're not eating it cuz it tastes like shit.

Really Michelle's problem has been largely that she made a noobie mistake and went after a major industry when she really shouldn't have.

And we should be so lucky as to have another person do it. Sooner or later we have to fight back or accept our place as sheep.

I'm happy the school districts pushed back and said 'dont tell us what to serve'. Apparently they weren't going to be sheep.

"Speaking in Milwaukee, Wisconsin today, would-be First Lady Michelle Obama said, “for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.”

Then in Madison, she said, “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I’m really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.”

~~~
After that anti American outburst, Mz Obama was seldom ever again heard from on national television or anywhere else...
May the ugly fat bitch RIP and never be heard from again
No, they accepted being sheep. Just to big business instead of to good health. But I can see how you'd make that mistake.
Sheep follow. That's what they did when they put in the policy. Then, after actually tasting the crap, they choose to be adults and make their own decisions.
I understand how you'd defer to the Gov't to make all your decisions for you. Its what children and the looney left does.
They are already making the decisions. This was about making better decisions.
Precisely. Now the school lunch programs are making better choices, and the parents are making sure that they do.
The First Lady's program increases awareness, and that makes it a great success.
I guess, I just wished she'd stuck her guns a little more. A lot of people forget but when she first came out it wasn't just about making better choices it was also about how our current system that subsidized unhealthy food making it difficult for the poor and working class to eat quality food was bullshit and she very quickly lost track of that. . .or what most people seem to think happened someone far enough up the food chain told her stop rocking the boat.
Hummus is too fatty? :confused: it's fucking chickpeas.
It probably looks icky to a kid though. Bean dip?
There's good and bad fats.
Kids aren't sophisticated enough to know the intersectionality of nutrition and food prep for satisfaction of taste. And they shouldn't. They should be allowed to be kids. It's the job of adults to know what's better. Not everything has to be kale & wheatgrass milkshakes, but we can change up our eating for the better in baby steps without sacrificing fun times in the mix.
Sub hummus for mayo or mustard on a good burger or sausage dog. Let their bellies do the rest. You can intro better alternatives without having to force or preach. When I was a kid, I sucked down fast food crap from the Mickey D's Burger King Wendy's machine without questioning anything. Part of it was being a kid, but also, I realize now that I wasn't around areas and people that promoted healthier meals enough. It was always there, but options were nowhere near like it is today. I now make kick-ass burgers and sammiches with better ingredients that the younger me would've gleefully devoured as alternates to the fast-food crap.
Hummus is gross. I'd love to see what precisely the standards are.
You ain't had good hummus then. It's a great dip and spread food to compliment most meals, especially sammiches.
Hummus is le bombes. :D
Bullshit. The government mandated lunch programs offer smaller portions of "food" to the students who won't eat the crap they're being served. Kids who come into the schools hungry leave at the end of the day even hungrier than before; I've personally heard students admit the only reason they would show up for school in the first place is because lunch is the only hot meal they'll have that day.
Michelle's "fight against obesity" (which is, incidentally, something that she herself should practice those things of which she preaches) is a great waste of money and resources and is a giant over-reach by the liberal federal government. You can choose not to believe what I've seen or what I say, that's your prerogative, but it is the truth.
She's not obese at all, she does practice what she preaches, her entire family does.
I call bullshit that you've personally heard kids complain, I haven't tried this food but honestly breakfast is breakfast I can't see how they could possibly have botched that up.
Can someone show what exactly is on there because honestly like everything that goes "wrong" under Obama this reeks of people who don't want it to work sabotaged it and then complained that it didn't work.
She's got bigger thighs than I've got, and the system I worked for sent that money back rather than try to force the students to eat shit that Michelle herself wouldn't try. Have you been in a public school lunchroom and witnessed the look of disbelief in a child's face when a portion of applesauce is all of one tablespoon? I suggest you at least visit a school that adhere's to the mandates and try that lunch for yourself.
