Apostrophe Apocalypse?

It's not just Boston, Lincolnshire or even mid-Devon, but in Birmingham (in central England), there's been a real row about it on road signs. Claim & counter claim (usually the ones who've seen the name for all their lives as opposed to the ill-educated twerps who don't know why there's a fuss) continue to be voiced.

Meanwhile we still see too many examples of the murder of the apostrophe in signs at the local shop or market; "potato's 20p" and so on.

Personally, if somewhere like Martha's Vineyard includes the apostrophe, then it's good enough for everywhere.
If Horn's Lane has had an apostrophe since Adam were a lad, then it should darn well keep it, IMO.
