Two years ago, a slate of radical democratic socialists shocked the state of Nevada by winning all but one of the party leadership positions. In response, every paid staffer who worked for the Democratic Party resigned. Judith Whitmer became chairman of the party, and the civil war was on.

The significance of the defeat of the Democratic Socialist Party in Nevada should not be underestimated. The progressive wave that began with the election of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (R-N.Y.) in 2018 may already have crested. Establishment Democrats have begun to fight back to keep the party viable. In Chicago, a law-and-order candidate appears ready to win the mayor’s race from a “defund the police” activist. In San Francisco, the local Soros-backed prosecutor Chesa Boudin was recalled, and several other Soros-backed prosecutors around the country are in serious trouble.

Nothing concentrates the mind better than the prospect of being hung. And establishment Democrats realize they can’t win elections running as socialists or radical culture warriors.

If there ever was a “progressive moment,” it’s gone. Some of the dregs like AOC, Ilhan Omar, and other radicals will remain. But Bernie Sanders is 81. Elizabeth Warren is 73. Who will replace them as socialist icons?

Just one term after shocking the Democratic establishment in Nevada by taking control of the influential state party, a slate of Democratic socialists were swept out of power this week, with a unity slate led by state assemblywoman Daniele Monroe-Moreno taking control, the first Black woman to lead the Nevada Democratic Party.

But her win also represents a sea change that has the national party breathing a sigh of relief after a rough midterm cycle in Nevada, when Democrat Steve Sisolak lost his bid for reelection while Democratic Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto won a cliffhanger to keep her seat, ensuring her party would retain control of the Senate.

The split in Nevada between the Democratic Socialists who were in control and the so-called Reid Machine—the remnants of the successful organizing operation created by former Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid—led the Reid Democrats to create their own outside group, which resulted in a disjointed statewide effort and disappointing effort overall in the midterms.

Denmark isn't a socialist country. It has a market economy as do Sweden, Norway, and Finland. Democrat socialists in the US are trying their best to destroy our free market and replace it with a Marxist command-order economy. Their idealistic perceptions of how it "ought to be" are bereft of economic understanding but complete with hatred for personal freedom, economic or otherwise.

You are projecting your own concerns onto the concerns of those who call themselves "democratic socialists." These people are not motivated by "hatred for personal freedom, economic, or otherwise," but by concern for an economy that continually enriches those who are rich and who have the talent to become rich, while it lowers standards for at least half of the population.

Beyond a certain point I see little moral significance to the distribution of wealth and income. Hard work, honesty, and common decency will keep a person off of welfare (usually) and out of prison. They will not make that person rich. Many rich people have none of those qualities. Consider Trump, for example.

Those who call themselves "democratic socialists" really admire Scandinavian social democracy. They would benefit their cause by calling themselves "social democrats."

Today, 36% of U.S. adults say they view socialism somewhat (30%) or very (6%) positively, down from 42% who viewed the term positively in May 2019. Six-in-ten today say they view socialism negatively, including one-third who view it very negatively.

And while a majority of the public (57%) continues to view capitalism favorably, that is 8 percentage points lower than in 2019 (65%), according to a national survey from Pew Research Center conducted Aug. 1-14 among 7,647 adults.

When Americans say they prefer socialism to capitalism we may be sure that they are not longing for what existed in the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, and what exists in North Korea under Kim Jong-un. They are looking at what they see of capitalism every day of their lives. They do not like what they see.

Most young people know that they will never enjoy the standards of living of their parents. Many have nothing to show for their college degrees but unpayable student loans. Some have watched their parents lose middle class jobs and be required to take jobs paying much less, when they should be saving for retirement.

They admire those economies because they falsely believe their national product is because of Socialism, but it isn't. They think they are governed by command order controls which they aren't. They want to associate themselves with the idea that Socialism can produce a free and vibrant economy, but as history shows, it can't. They are typical of people who are undereducated in economics, real life, and easily mislead by totalitarian proselytizers. Here in the US the Democratic Socialists of America is a known communist sympathizing organization that at one time had about 70 members of the US Democrat congressional delegation who were members.
