Anyway You Look At It.

According to George Will the nation is caught between a rock and a hard place when the Supreme Court rules on the constitutional fitness of DOMA, the one man, one woman marriage decree of Congress.

Here's the problem:

If the Supreme Court upholds DOMA same-sex marriages fizzle without federal protections for taxes etc.

If the Supreme Court opposes DOMA same-sex marriages stay illegal in 38 states, including California, and Congress cant interfere with new law that recognizes any marriage.

Maybe.

I guess the question in my mind is how do we get in these jams?

Hell.

That is an easy question to answer.

Vote for Anti-Christan Liberals...doesn't matter if they are Democrat or Republican.

The result will be the same in the long run.

Ha! Its too late to vote! The Supremes have it in their court.

Will ain't no lawyer.

If the supreme court overturns a law, that does not stop any new laws on the same subject.

Not to mention that the court has reversed effects of previous rulings (generally after many years pass).

Then there's "creative" redefinitions like "civil union" and "domestic partnership contract".

No matter what the court does with DOMA, the fighting will continue.

I take you points BUT add that lawyers are so damned dum that possession of a law degree shouldnt be accepted as proof of competence or anything, because most lawyers are pretty pitiful. Most judges are worse.

This should on the GB

I know this sounds like just another GB incite a riot thread but it does have some merit in the GLBT forum too. It concerns lots of folks. On the GB it will get torn to pieces and get ugly like all the rest. Here it might possibly get debated and some folks enlightened.

This was my thinking :)

It's funny

I made an innocent post here a few days ago about a young man trying to get a date with a SI model and all hell was unleashed and I was lectured about how it should be in The HT Cafe.

Listen you, I cannot carry you thru this entire thread. You simply must start thinking for yourself. Not sure if that is possible however what with you being a fan of cream o' wheat instead of grits and all.

Cream of Wheat! Have you lost your ever-lovin mind? I tasted COW once, long ago, and spit the nasty stuff out! Jeez Louise.

I aint heavy, I'm yo brutha!

But some of us have a concern about GLBT issues. Plus JBJ has a nice mustache. ;)

And its impossible to discuss anything over at GB.

Why is that exactly. I am convinced there are some intelligent people on that forum but the rate at which most threads devolve into the same gutter nonsense is amazing. Good topics get turned inside out by the same tired old name calling and stubborn attitudes that refuse to even consider another's point of view. Oh almost forgot to mention that is seems to be a requirement to accuse each poster of being an alt of someone else who is likely an alt already. I need a scorecard to read some of the threads.

I stay away from any threads having to do with politics or religion here for obvious reasons, but I have a sincere question about this issue, so I'm throwing caution to the wind. When the Supreme Court votes to allow SS marriage, I think they will, will they also have to allow polygamy? How can they not?

I dwelled there for a while but grew tired of the constant acrimony. I suspect the GB gang goes there for the tumult, and topics are an excuse to start the fun and games. But the AH is worse at times.

The issue is important for the reason you say: IS POLYGAMY IN PLAY NOW?

To be honest, same-sex marriages already exist in all states, as androgen insensitive males marry other males, all the time. AIMs look like women, they believe theyre women, and they act like women. But they have no uterus or ovaries or menses.

Maybe.

We get in these jams by thinking the government is the answer. The correct answer is always GET THE GOVERNMENT OUT of our business. Then Freedom can Ring.

and animals and just plain objects.

Once the natural man and woman requirement is nullified its wide open.

Surprisingly ( to them) gay people cannot steer the run away legal system any better than anyone else.

If you don't want insanity in Government then do not support it.

Now having said that, some sort of legal union recognized by the Government with whatever benefits that seems needful well...this is America.

But do not expect Christians and several other types of people to accept it and support it no matter what kind of judgment or legislation gets past.

It will not happen not now and not for a long time.

This is not how I would explain it to you face to face. I'm leaving out a few things.

I am not trying to start a flame war here.

When one throws a stick of dynamite into a outhouse they do not get to dictate the direction in witch the crap flies!

One can't dictate to the Supreme Court how to rule or how much of a ruling to give.

Written briefs and oral are mostly heard with but they do not have to be.

Once they have it...Who knows?

One hopes they go with the legal/constitutional decision.

While I wish it wasn't an issue, I am glad it is too. Twenty-five plus years ago this wouldn't be discussed, so even slow, it is progress. Change of attitude is one of the most difficult things to change; behaviors are easier and at least measurable.

For many people looking outside traditional thoughts and behaviors doesn't come easily, I know it can be true of me, even though I try to be open minded. So for lots of people just thinking about same-sex marriage is new. For me it's a no-brainer. (And for Garvin, I consider myself a Christian, that is if I had to label myself.)

As for the polygamy part, I believe the language in the law is same-sex couples. So I don't see it as a problem but what do I know?

(I think this thread is in a good place, for some reasons already mentioned. Plus it's an interesting topic.)
