And it would be a good idea to be specific about the region where your character is situated. The North was only just becoming recognised as a source of cultural influence in the seventies.

My recollections in no particular order include:

Student protests. Hot pants. platform shoes. Porn on betamax. A loosening of family discipline. hot summers. Blokes with earings. Good football. high employment. Sweet, T.Rex, Slade, Gary Glitter, Stones, Faces and Bay City Rollers.

My main memory of political worth. The three day week. Winter of discontent (which the tories and press hijacked and redated to the late seventies during a socialist govt.)

Edited to add: Robin Trower.

My guy will be located in Britian London most probably...

Have you searched for any newspaper archives online? The London Times probably has at least headlines available for the time period your story will cover.

I'm not convinced: Mersey-beat had its impact in the 60s...

I'm trying to write a fiction piece based on a guy who gets sent back into the Seventies, but one of the problems i'm suffering is my general lack of knowledge of the Seventies, eighties and fer crying out loud even the nineties.

Where was i, living in a box somewhere.

Preferably, from the British point of veiw, as i'm british and so will be my character.
Well, I was there...

My feeling was that we'd moved from the "You've never had it so good" post-war era, through the hippy revolution ("Make love not war") into all that being taken for granted, without any anticipation of the Thatcherite, right-wing, selfish, "money, money, and above all, MONEY" ethos.

Nam apart, it felt as if things were getting better and would carry on doing so for ever. Just watch M*A*S*H...

Shame that turned out to be just dreams...

I was 18 in 1976, played electric piano in a Jazz band. Then I heard "Neat Neat Neat" by the Damned, and decided to become a punk. That was my Summer of Sam, when I lost my virginity, and a lot of weight, both lossesi ncurred through excessive drug use.

Punk was a reaction against apathy and complacency. The fashion was clever. But the music was mostly really, really dire. Punk was very commercial: The songs were short and easy to sell, the image was cheap and easy to manufacture. Punks were invariably white people, and they and their music gave off an angry energy, not at all sexy -- for sex we had James Brown, The Meters, and fledgling disco.

The drugs of choice for teenage punks were amphetaimes and solvent, angry, cheap and nasty drugs to go with an angry cheap and nasty people.

I hated the punk movement for being hypocritical (pretending to be anti-capitalist), hated hippies, hated disco, hated TV, hated everything that was commercialized. There were a LOT of people like me around. We had to wait for the '80's and '90s to hear music that really spoke to us and for us: Madness, The Specials, Bad Manners, later on Blur and Oasis. Now things are pretty healthy in Britain musically again.

Albums, Beatles, Stones,

Some of the best Beatles are pre 1970s, but they were not in eclipse. See the Album titles.

Some fine Stones Albums came out, and I even found the songs on them, on the 'net. (Sorry, but where there is no space between words, that's the break, and I had to insert the commas.)
