I've been a huge fan of ghost stories most all my life. I do love science fiction and horror stories, but I always seem to come back to a well written ghost story or even a movie with ghostly elements in them. I guess it's my love affair with the supernatural:)

What is your favorite ghost story/ movie? My favorite is a movie called "Half Light".

I've always adored ghost stories. We had the old record with The Lady With the Golden Arm story on it and I can't tell you how many times I played that. I'm having trouble thinking of good movies with ghost elements though. Maybe The Sixth Sense and Lady in White.

Look at https://www.literotica.com/s/chosen-ch-01-1, over in non-erotica. (It's not completely lacking in erotic content but it's extremely tame by literotica standards.) Note it's not horror or horrific, but has creepy aspects. I have no love affair with the supernatural, and this story is about as far as I go, but I consider it well written.

I love a good horror movie. I'll have to check this one out, never heard of it.

I just saw a few that were all pretty good.

The Invitation, The Babadook, both pretty creepy.

The best I've seen lately is The Witch, ho-ly crap! Soooo good and soooo scary. It's very subtle though and might not be your thing. The last 5 - 10 minutes of that movie are just bone-chilling. Talk about Erotic Horror. It was extremely hot in a totally horrifying kind of way. I loved it.

I LOVE GHOST STORIES. (Read that in Oprah's "I LOVE BREAD" voice.) I don't have even a shred of belief in ghosts or the supernatural, but damn, I love a good ghost story. I particularly like the differences between Western and Asian ghost tales and how the rules for ghosts are all different for each. I could write a whole essay on that.

Favorite ghost movies in no particular order:
The Grudge
The Eye
The Ring (I actually like the American remake better)
Crimson Peak
Mama (double feature it with the one above)
The Innkeepers (this one is a quiet little indy movie but it's SO GOOD)

I'm sure I'm leaving off some movies I love. And I'm so excited for the new Ghostbusters.

Oh, I forgot about The Witch. I need to see that! And thanks for the recc on The Invitation.

"Truly, Madly, Deeply": ghost romance.

"Crimson Peak": very different kind of romance, has ghosts in it but I'm not sure I'd call it a "ghost story" because it could've worked without the ghosts. Still a gorgeous film.

"The Canterville Ghost" (Oscar Wilde story, various adaptations): Modern American family moves into English mansion haunted by the ghost of a murderer, ghost suffers culture shock.

I guess I'll have to try Crimson Peak now. It got such bad reviews I stayed away from it, but if the AH says to check it out . . .

I'll be honest. I think Crimson Peak is more about lush gothic style than a great plot. I thought it was gorgeously made and Hiddleston is great as a Byron-esque lead. I think it's more enjoyable if you already have a little bit of fondness for Vincent Price movies and British horror traditions.

Ditto'ing the b&w classics mentioned. Those are always fun. Also, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

I agree completely. As a mystery, Crimson Peak is childishly easy to figure out, and as a ghost story, it's neither particularly creative nor effective. But as an exercise in art direction, cinematography, and deeply, movingly beautiful Gothic sets, it's one for the ages.

Technically, not a good movie, since it fails at its basic storytelling goals. But it certainly does have its moments.

My favorite ghost story is still The Haunting of Hill House. The movie from '63 is a classic in its own right. The remake is best left undisturbed.

Yeah, that's about right. It suffered a bit from being mis-marketed as horror/mystery; it has elements of those things but at heart it's Tragic Goth Romance.

Guillermo del Toro always does good visuals and he excelled on this one. I don't usually notice what characters are wearing, but I spent a lot of this film muttering "I want her clothes... and her clothes... and his clothes... ALL THE CLOTHES GIVE THEM TO ME NOW".

Good call.

Ghost tales are great fun, to read and to write. To me, the epitome is The Monkey's Paw. I did a less gruesome set of ghostly stories in A Taste of Spirits and I did a Topper satire in Ghost of a Chance. I haven't more in the works now but hey, it could happen.

The Uninvited (1944, Ray Milland)
The Haunting - original 1963 version; the remake is execrable
The Innocents (Film working of 'The Turn Of the Screw') and the Michael Winner prequel 'The Nightcomers'
Poltergeist
The Amazing Mr. Blunden (not scary, but a great one for pre-teens)

Books:
Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu
Varney The Vampyre or 'The Feast of Blood' which is so bad it's wonderful, it's the epitome of 'Penny Dreadful' but I couldn't put it down, mainly because I couldn't believe it could get any worse as I read; I was wrong.
Hell House by Richard Matheson
Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark by Alvin Schwarz

I've been catching up on movies since I've been out of work and this is the third mention of Crimson peak I've seen in the last few days, guess I have to check it out.

Did you know they are doing a grudge vs the ring movie? Right now its only in Japan, but I'm sure there will be a US version at some point, hope so anyway.

The Insidious trilogy

The Conjuring

A Haunting in Connecticut.

And one that always stayed with me, because I just felt it was so well done was a little hyped movie starring Nicole Kidman: The Others. Damn creepy and great twist ending.

For Books

Hell House by Richard Matheson, crappy movie version done in 1973 would love to see a modern attempt, especially as one of the characters was plagued by visions that brought out her repressed lesbian desires.

Ghost Story by Peter Straub was excellent, although I was slightly let down by the end it was still a damn good read.

Never watch the movie:rolleyes:

Just saw Witch last weekend its an odd movie. Its good enough to keep you locked in trying to figure out what's going on, but the ending is kind of vague.

The acting was excellent and for me what had me cringing is the 24/7-literally- talk about God and how they're all sinning and begging for salvation that was horror enough for me.

But if you see it...PM me your thoughts on the ending because...I was a little lost about a detail I won't mention here.

Hey now, I freaking loved the movie Poltergeist:) The movie "Amnityville Horror" was pretty good, too, but I loved reading the book a lot more. Can't explain why, though. "Sleepy Hollow" was great, too, but another case where I enjoyed the story a lot more. Nice list of ghost stories :)

Just saw the remake of Poltergeist, not bad, but the original was far better, this seemed cheesier.

Sleepy Hollow, was a better movie than I expected.

Here's one most people won't think of for a good creepy movie, but it was really well done.

The First Silent Hill movie was excellent.

Growing up in New York-- not Long Island, don't worry 😉 --I had heard the real story and the hoax behind it before seeing the movie, so Amityville Horror was just comical for me.

Poltergeist would also be on that comical scale for me, except...
We had a 'relocated' cemetery in the neighborhood I was raised in. All of the neighbors knew about it, and just kind of excepted it as it was...no in-ground pools...someone's back step was an over turned tombstone... All good until a new family moved in with all boys who decided to dig up their yard to make their own dirt bike track 😈. Sure as shit, they found one of the 'relocated' first try, and of course, being the sweetheart that I am, I made them watch that movie after the media circus, and forensics teams left. Their faces all throughout the movie? Priceless.
