Anyone know offhand how long Laurel takes off for the holidays?

I submitted a story late on the 23rd. As of a few minutes ago on the 27th it was still in pending. Usually by now it would have the "new" label telling me that it was on the list for Monday.

I fully expected that nothing was going to happen on the 24th and 25th, possibly the 26th as well as that is Boxing Day a lot of places.

Idle curiosity more than anything else, I was wondering if anyone else had run into this? I figure it will get published when it gets published.

Getting back to the original question... I count 158 stories published today. I think Laurel's been busy.

Or a couple of Beta Readers to give it a spin.

Finding a beta reader seems to be harder than I'd expected. I posted a request on the editor's forum for beta readers for the third part of my 3-part story on the 19th, I think it was, the same day I submitted an edit of the second part. 11 days later, not only am I still waiting for the edit to be published (I assume Laurel must prioritise new stories over edits, which is fair enough), but that post has been read over 100 times with no bites and is now slipping into obscurity.

I'd wondered if it might be because of my warning that the story contains an element of non-consent/reluctance (more the latter, to my mind), but then I see a number of similar requests for beta readers or editors have also gone without response. Maybe I just have to admit to myself it's possible people skimmed the first two parts and were that unimpressed they couldn't see the point in helping with the third!

You're dead on. Got a nice note from Laurel. Story is going up tomorrow. I guess writing erotica replaced Christmas travel this year. :)

Getting editors is difficult. A lot of them are worse than the writers they try to help. The good ones aren't interested in beginning authors that need to be taught the basics.

I studied the top stories from great authors, to begin with. There is a format to be followed. Walls of text or multiple people speaking in the same paragraph don't work. Your story will get flamed over those issues.

There isn’t much speech in mine but I have now moved it into separate paragraphs and broke the paragraphs down a lot more. Hopefully, take 2 will be a success. If not, keep an eye on your inbox. 😂

I think it's mostly because of the time/effort that would be involved in working with a multipart work. Anyone with actual experience in giving this sort of help is aware of the time required to dedicate to someone else's creation for free.

If I was looking for a beta reader I would put a request at the beginning of every story I submitted. If someone reads that story and enjoys it I would think they will be more inclined to offer their services than casting your net in the editors forum. At least by them responding because of a particular story you know they read stories in that category which is one potential problem out of the way.

That makes a lot of sense.

Thanks. That seems like a good idea.
