Anyone know anything about publishing kid's books?

I had to write a children's book for one of my classes. I showed it to a few of my third graders, and they loved it. So, now I'm playing around with the idea of throwing it over to a publishing house. But it seems like there are 8 million of them.

It's a book that introduces the concept of fractions in everyday life.

This may not be the best place for this thread, but y'all are the only writers I chat with on a regular basis.

That sounds like something you might be able to interest Scholastic Books in -- or one of the other companies that specializes in educational books.

I'm pretty sure that Google can turn up their submissions requirements or at least an address to contact them with.

Fractions, schmactions

Dear PS,
Don't feel bad. I'm terrible at fractions.

I think it's the perfect place for this thread. Is it illustrated? I haven't a clue on how to appeal to children. If your publisher refuses and you are so inclined to self-publish, how about it as an EBook?

True.

We are more accustomed to writing about combining full-bodied figures.

(Did you ever notice that nobody has an eight and a quarter inch dick, or a 36.5 D cup bra?)

The only advice I can give you is that in writing children's books you can use a larger - though different - vocabulary. ;)

Well, I did some stuff for the class submission, but last night I met someone who might be my professional artist. I definitely can't illustrate....I have the artistic capacity of a 3 year old. But I guess we can't have everything :)

I was looking at self publishing...but it's pretty expensive. I'm not sure if I'd want to do an ebook...but we'll see :) I'm picking up writers market and such and I'll go from there.

But if there are any other illustrators out there...it's a children's book, based in New Orleans. It would be helpful if you were familiar with sites in and around New Orleans, but I can also provide photos.

From what one published friend of mine said, most of the time a new author does not pick who illustrates her book; the publishing company picks someone. I don't know how universally true this is but I would like to.

Best of luck to you.

Well, I figure if I found someone to do a few sample illustrations and the publisher liked both that would be awesome. I guess I'm just a total control freak...I'd like to have as much control as possible. But I'd like to see my work published more :)
