I'm considering taking a job there and since I've never been there and my only two points of reference are movies (Field of Dreams and Children of the Corn), I was wondering if there are any Lit folks there.

If so, can anyone give me insights into the state culture, specifically the Des Moine area? Feel free to PM me or leave a response here. Thanks!

close by,just over the border from Iowa. We live about 100 miles from Des moines, so beware!! LOL!!

What would you like to know?

One thing that will be different than Utah is you will see big change in the seasons. You will have winter, with lots of snow sometimes, except for this year!!

Ive never lived in DesMoines but I think the midwest is all about the same. There is Iowa threads on here. No major sports but an amusement park, concerts, the state fair, four seasons like Omaha man says and even a few porn shops from what ive read here. Lots of corn and rolling hills no mountains.

The Iowa State Fair is included in a newly-released 36-page wall calendar titled “Discover America” that features the Top 200 Events in America.

where else can you see this??

Im not good at posting links but there is a page on here called Iowa Literotica People in the playground area. Im not sure when the last post was but within a month im sure.

I'm an Iowan

I go to Des Moines sometimes and it is a pretty large city. Great resteraunts, clubs, shopping etc. Like any other big city.

An Apt in DM will run you a good $600+ for a 1 bedroom, but their wages are decent there too.

It is cold cold in the winter and hot hot in the summer.

I live in a more rural area and I really like it.

Thanks, EE. Have you always lived in the midwest? I grew up in CA and the furthest west I've lived is Texas, which is not exactly the midwest. I will fly out there for an interview and check it out for myself but I appreciate the info!

Nope i moved here from Colorado.

The nice thing about the Midwest is the people out here. Quite friendly.

I didn't always like it though, it took some adjustment time.

Thanks, EE. I'd imagine there was some adjusting. I think I can bloom where I'm planted but I may need adjusting too. I guess I'll have to see.

I have to agree the people here are great, except for that weird one they call Oman!! :D

Let us know what kind of info you would like and us Midwesteners will try to provide!

One nice thing about Des Moines is its location!
YOU take one interstate you can get to alot of interesting large cities. Depending on what interstate you get on,Des Moines is not a bad drive to Omaha,Kansas City and Minneapolis. Chicago is only a little bit further.

Sports
Des Moines has alot of farm teams for different leagues, the NHL,MLB. However, you can go to Kansas city or Minneapolis for teams like the Twins,Vikings, Royals,Chiefs, etc.
There are alot of college teams around the area too! In fact, you are close to Omaha, where the College world series is held every summer.

Shopping
West Des Moines just put in a brand new fancy shopping mall, one of the nicest around. However,if the shopping in Des Moines doesnt satisfy you,jus drive up to Minneapolis and you can hit Mall of America, one of the largest malls in America. It is HUGE!

Food
Midwest is great if you like steaks. WHO DOESNT! :D If you get tired of steak! lol, there are alot of other choices in Des Moines and then again you can travel to even more choices. Kansas City is known worldwide for barbecue,Omaha is known for having the biggest amount of restaurants in proportion to its population.

Entertainment.
All cities in the area have all sizes of places for concerts for all types of places. If Des Moines isnt large enough for a certain group, the other cities probably will.
Ames,Iowa has a large stadium which has held many concerts,Omaha has a new auditorium which was just rated as seventh best in the world, just under Madison Square garden. Concerts there lately have ranged from U2 to paul Mcartney to Rolling Stones to YOYO MA to broadway shows to famous comedians.
Festivals abound all over the area in the spring and summer.
Many groups have had their starts here.311,bright eyes, manheim steamrollover.slipknot and many more.
There are alot of other great things in the area. Omaha has a famous zoo, with the largest indoor rainforest in the world.

Like I said, just let us know what you are looking for! If you are looking for a husband, the area just had 8 people split the largest powerball jacpot on record $385 million!! LOL! :D :)

Live about 45 or so miles from DM. grew up in WDM. I like it.

As someone once said, Iowans like their vices kept quiet. They will go to the casino on the edge of town. Basically, so long as you do not disturb the neighbors, do as you wish.
