The slight squishiness means that we're nearest to the Sun on 4 January. When we're nearer, we orbit faster. I'm actually working on a story where a planet has no tilt (like Jupiter) and  all the seasonal variation is caused by the orbital mechanics.
So its coldest when we are closest to the sun.

But you can't discount the GB (Ginger bird) disruption factor. That can cause havoc and much squishiness.
