I'm just looking for advice on how to write stories in catagories you can't experience.

For example: I'm a woman so there's NO WAY I will ever know what 2 men feel or experience when they are together. SO is it polite to start "interviewing" men about preferences or do I just avoid the topics like the plague?

ANY advice would be welcome!

Asking is best, especially here, the authors are good about responding to questions. that said, it is usually best to have a specific question or topic. Broad interviews are less likely to get in depth responses.

Different people take different approaches to this. Some write what they know; others enjoy trying to branch out to things they're not as familiar with. Personally, I think that the chief thing to aim for is to make the character a "real" person - psychologically and emotionally believable, with comprehensible motives. If that all makes sense, then the simple mechanics of sex aren't too hard to guess at, and you can always run it across a member of the opposite sex for a check.

Interviewing is a fine way to go about it. And read some of the other stories as well. Anything by Carson_Shepherd is a perfect intro to really good M/M porn. Er, I mean erotica!

Welcome to the AH Lil!

Thanks!

I have to admit that message boards intimidate me a bit, I'm trying my best to overcome that. Although it is good to know I can post specifics here and find some help.

Right now I don't have any specific questions I was just feeling the waters to make sure I could find help and see if it would be "OK" to just ask, "Hey how does it feel when...."

Thanks for the response!

Some of the coolest threads here have started like this. But your question is too inclusive, I believe. Cruise (if you'll pardon the phrase) the M/M section and see what goes on. Actually, there are two threads to it, in my experience. One is that there is a lot of universality. On a particular level, sex is sex, that is, and gender not the important part. But on the other hand you see that there is a whole culture to gay sex, a set of expectations and conventions. That can't be inferred, as you note. You have to proceed by inquiry and investigation to discern it.

It's the same with lesbian sex. Universality in the sex, but a very outre sensibility and attitude, a complex culture.

I think the culture is best investigated by reading in the category. But the details of how it feels to be a guy, wearing guy anatomy and coming in a guy way for guy reasons-- that's where a thread like this, but with a specific question, will give you the most insight.

Welcome to the AH.

No reason to avoid it. We just had a similar thread the other day about men writing lesbian sex scenes. You should write what interests you. I write male/male scenes and I've never heard any complaints from the gay men who read my stories. We have all sorts of writers here trying out categories that are not their usual preference. Just go for it. Feel free to ask for advice. :)

hello lil :) and a warm welcome :)

Ask and you shall recieve and all that and here youwill recieve. The good folk of this forum are always up to the challenge :)

:) I'm just trying to get a feel for the boards and thought the best way to do so was to plunge in with a question. I used m/m as the example, but there are other topics out there also. I simply grabbed the first one in my mind.

Again thanks so much for the pointers they really are a help!

True. On the other hand, sometimes it's nice to see something really fresh that steps out of the conventions. Possibly it's just me ... but if I see one more "mirror scene" in "mature" or ginormous cock in "gay," I'm gonna smack the monitor around. ;)

Mirror scene? Dare I ask what that is?

I was pondering on the "ginormous cock" thought and laughed. See I work for an adult company selling products and you have NO IDEA how many men call to get the pills or pumps to get the GINORMOUS cock...I told one man that I felt men were size queens more than women were!

The apparently obligatory mirror scene goes like this:

* Subject of story (usually but not always female) gets dressed or has shower or some other reason to get naked
* Subject gazes lovingly at self in mirror, describing in loving detail her perky breasts (usually with bra size), tight bod, etc.
* Subject thinks about how great s/he looks for his/her age
* Subject usually makes explicit reference to working out

I will try not even to go into the number of things I think are wrong with the typical mirror scene. I will, however, point out that Lady Jeanne actually wrote one I liked, which God knows is a challenge beyond most mortals.

True talent will always show.

You know ... some of things I have seen in sex shops flatly scare me. If someone whipped out one during sex, my reaction would be to retreat screaming "Get that thing the hell away from me!"

Ah Horse.

You do rock. But you very correctly point out that Jeanne is exceptional. I want to ring in on that idea with a resounding "yea." The kid is good.

Some of the things we sell scare me! The things people look for and ask about are endless. Sometimes we end up shivering with the creeps from a call...and sometimes we have to put people on hold so we can catch our breath from laughing.

I can't think of who really needs a dildo the size of an elephant trunk FOR FUN!

Hi, I'd give you two pieces of advice. First, try and imagine what you want to write about. If you can't imagine it, or you can't think of it in a way that interests you, don't write about it. If it doesn't excite you, no matter how much you learn about it, you won't excite your readers.

Second, sometimes imagination is more interesting than reality. I certainly agree with some of the other posts which suggest interviewing people who can give you a real perspective on things. However, if their answers take away what you dreamed was exciting about the thing don't use them. Even if your imagination is not accurate, your passion and excitement are more important to your story than accuracy. I know that may sound strange, and certainly you don't want to be completely off in left field on something, but this is fiction not a research paper.

Real perspective is good to have...that's why I was wondering. As for writing what is exciting *giggles* EVERYTHING excites me. I can find erotica in places that most never would think of! My brain just works like that. ;)

I have a long-standing desire to see a really hot, sizzling bondage/sadism scene written in a pantry. Anyone can write on in a dungeon.

Are you the one for the job?

WOW! I love it! I will work that in to my BDSM story and hope I can do your desire justice!

I am working on my Novella "New Found Love" trying to smooth out the rough edges, beef it up a bit and then I will send it to a publishing house. *gulps* Maybe the newly added pantry scene will seal the deal!

Go for it, a Shanglan challenge is an invigourating one!

(I had to write a lit story about a gender confused horse. It was tough, but I've done it. Just waiting for it to be accepted!)

Welcome to the AH Lilin. You'll find lots of help here.

Can't add much here. Write about what excites you. Use your imagination.

You can ask people here to check your stories. Read the other authours works and you'll soon have a good idea on who will be best for a category.

Looking forward to reading your stuff.

Really, EL, it's such fine work, with so many wonderful lines and images throughout. I can't wait for it to be up to vote it!
