Any Scientologists here?

It occurs to me that the Church of Scientology is probably the most unpopular religion in America. Nobody who has heard of it and is not in it seems to have any respect for it. Not even Satanism, or Wicca or any other form of neo-paganism, or the Hare Krishnas, or the Unification Church with its glassy-eyed Moonies selling flowers in the streets, is so widely despised. It even uses a form of Latin cross (just like a regular Latin cross, but with four smaller rays at the corners added) as its symbol without even pretending to be a Christian church -- a gesture seemingly just calculated to provoke. It says something for the power of the tradition of religious freedom in this country that Scientology thrives as much as it does and its facilities are rarely vandalized. (Of course, it also speaks to the power of the Church's taste for defensive or proactive litigation; and the power of having a few high-profile Hollywood celebs in thrall.) Anyway, if we have any Hubbardite Litsters, let's give them the chance to tell their side here.

BTW, I live across Tampa Bay from Clearwater, Florida, which is Scientology's Rome. Sometimes you'll see people walking around downtown CW wearing what appears to be some kind of blue Air Force or Navy uniform -- it ain't, they're in Sea Org. (Hubbard was a Navy man.)

Actually the state of religious freedom in America is in increasingly bad shape. All religions are being targeted for longterm oppression. The goal is to eventually force them all into the closet or make them so "uncool" that no young people want to join. Religions need to put aside their differences and fight for religious rights together or they are all in trouble.

As for Scientology, I am not a member and don't have an opinion on it. I think a lot of cults are kind of cool though. If they give people meaning and purpose, why not?

No rational adult would belong to a religion.

Rational adults seem to be in short supply here:rolleyes:

You wonder why we have so many problems in the world? I blame people who believe a sky ghost whispers to them that they should do what he says or else.

What do you think about having a Scientologist as President?

Now, swap "Scientologist" with "Mormon". It's not much of a leap - at all.

Recidiva has posted extensively about her experience there. She has a lot of interesting stuff to say about it.

Not really. All she ever says (that I saw) was that it worked for her at the time but she would never give details about the tech or money or anything. Always left me thinking she was full of shit.

I remember her giving a lot of details, but that the main point was the philosophy of it. She also repeated a lot that she was always encouraged when there to be excellent at whatever she did, which is pretty harmless.

Scientology is one of the very few religions I'll make fun of. I try to be respectful of a persons beliefs but come on. A sci-fi writer suddenly shows up with a religion based on aliens and spaceships. At some point you gotta stop and say "Hey, wait a minute."
That being said and with a nod towards South Park for relentlessly bashing them, if a person chooses to believe in it then let them be. Laugh but let them be.

Stuart Smalley says the same thing and doesn't cost a dime.

This Is What Scientologists Actually Believe.

They're all like that.
A fairy tale writing carpenter shows up with a religion based on his virginal mother, resurrection and talking burning bushes. At some point you gotta...

Recidiva never asked me for anything.

And the Brethren are more hated/feared there?! Really?! Why?!

I can't figure that. Not only do they not seem to be in her area but I've never heard anything about them that would make me think they're hated by anyone except maybe hardcore Catholics or crazy ass Baptists.
