When I wrote my "Jamaican Swing" story, I got so much nice feedback from folks in Jamaica. I hope they're all safe tonight!

Safe is only the half of it. Crops in the ground are often destroyed, and a lot of rural Jamaica is dotted with subsistence gardens-- a row of beans, a row of ganja, a row of corn... After a hurricane, everyone has to rebuild their roof and then they find they have just the livestock. And the water makes people sick more. Recovery from the long-term effects takes time, and people go hungry.

Yes. I observed the same when visiting there. A very hard-working and frugal, yet generous, people. The resorts typically don't give tourists a real glimpse of that side of Jamaica.
