I do renaissance fairs, as in full costume, with a guild and acting the entire day and a question.

I've been learning shinai fighting lately due to the fact we can use them without extensive armor requirements, usually just a pair of gloves to protect the knucles works.

However, I've got bad wrists and taking a hit to my wrist or forearm can put me out of commission sword-wise for the rest of the day minimum. I've had it happen during training, it hurt beyond what I'll describe here.

So, here's my question- any ideas on what kind of guard that I could find or recommendations? I need to be able to fully flex my wrist while still having it protected.

Figured this would be a good place to ask, lol.

Yup...Been a fencer since college....

But for what you are talking about I would suggest talking to the local SCA..
They deal with this problem as a matter of course...
And yeah, that wack in the wrist hurts like a mother...don't it?

I've got bilateral wrist tendonitis- means all the tendons hate one another and love to get inflammed. Its worse in my right wrist and which hand to I lead with- the right.

So doing shinai hurts to some degree but if I keep with it regularly, then its not enough to stop me from doing anything. Its those whaps on the wrist that decommision me for a while and make me head for the ice packs, which I swear hurt worse then the initial hit.

Anyway- I'm part of a privateer (read legal pirate) guild and we've been doing live sword/shinai demos for a long time. And I'm the first person my Guild Mistress has seen that has such trouble with wrist shots but keeps playing anyway, lol.

Was looking at some of the special forces gloves from a military catalouge but I'd have to do something to make them look period.

'Sok...I savvy privateer... *grin* Random history buff and occaisional reinactor actually...
Hmmm My suggestion would be ...Well one, to avoid moulinets like the plauge.. But I have seen gloves that had a long gauntlet style cuff added, and then metal splines were added to the inside of the cuff (along with some padding). The rivets even looked nicely period from the outside...
However...
The best combination of flexibility and protection I have seen was an SCA "Half Gauntlet" Essentially because the protection has to bridge the flexible portion of the wrist. *shrug* shinai or rattan... Either way, youre getting hit with a big stick as far as your wrist is concerned.. And the wrist just isn't made to take that kind of punishment.

I play at fencing with my kids and husband sometimes. Ooh! I "sit on fences" sometimes. *c*

Call me a freak, but I think fencing is sexy.

Since I'll no longer be tripping on my skirts, I agree with you.

Joys of getting a new character that *gasp* wear's pants! And is still openly female!
Got to love the Killegrews.

Bracers might work.

There's one in every crowd. I'd say you need to be tied over that fence and punished, but you'd enjoy that WAY too much. :D

Sorry for th hijack. I think we're back on topic, now.

I continue to enjoy the way you think, DVS!

Well on that theme, I know a shinai leaves a lovely mark but doesn't bruise much, least I've never bruised from being hit. And the sting from it is quite a shock the first few times to say the least.

Have been looking at a variety of bracers, gloves and such and am thinking about peicing together a combination glove/wrist guard/padding that'll extend part way up my forearm.

Please forgive the hijack, Vixie, but...

Did anyone else just get a vision of DVS caning Fury while she's bent over an electric fence?

Please tell me it's not just me....

It's just you . . . ok maybe not. But I had to say it.

Both caning and electric fences scare me!

So no, that's not what I was getting a vision of DVS doing to me but I did get some visions! *winks*

*gasp* A hijack? That's inconceivable!
Oh well, its an amusing one.

And yeah, I can see that. It would be a shocking experiance on multiple levels.

Too bad it was only a vision. I'm running on empty over here and I think that would be a good start at fulfilling my needs in that area.

And, it would probably be outside, too. A nice secluded fence row I could keep her tied to for a few days...when you get a good thing, you want it to last. And, that would also take care of her screaming. Trust me...there WOULD be screaming :D

Oh, thanks for the vision, Snowy. You are sometimes a kinky little thing, aren't you. :D

I'm cane and electricity curious though, both together, sounds pretty scary!

But, being tied to the fence, what are you going to do about it? :D

....except a fair amount of squirming?

....and screaming?

Creaming???

(Don't forget I need to retain enough voice to tell my stories or I'm out of a job.)

You'd better stop hijacking this thread or Vixandra is going to help me tie you to that fence and take a few whacks of her own at your naked (and squirming) ass.

*Searches for motivation to prevent this from happening. Fails to find any.*

 AAAaaaw! You called me kinky! That means a lot, coming from a perve like yourself. Thank you! And you're welcome... Did I tell you the insurance company gave me a TENS for my knee?

Oh, a TENS of your own? I hope it's put to good use. Have you explored any of your more kinky body parts with it? Not that you knee isn't kinky, but you know what I mean.
