Anybody watch the tv show Any Day Now? I am a huge fan of the show, especially the part about the two women's friendship. I don't know why they canceled it. It was one of the best shows ever. I watch the re-run every day, and I think I just saw the final episode yesterday.

Any other fans?

Haven't heard about it either. What was this about?

It's about two women in Birbingham who grew up during the civil rights movement.

ONe is a black girl who's father is a civil rights activist.

The other is a white -very outspoken- tomboy who's uncle is in the KKK.

The two meet as kids and become friends, but high school and college tears then apart. The black girl moves to Chicago and is a successful attorney, I think it is, and returns about 15 years later for her fathers funeral, planning to stay a couple of weeks. Instead she runs into her old friend and she ends up taking over her father's law practice.

The story is told in flashbacks as there modern day situations often parellell (in a clever, not repetative way) their childhood exploits and problems. They explore issues of race, friendship, marriage, career, religion, and growing up.

the flashbacks are in black and white, with color added to only specific eareas (a shirt or a hair-tie for instance.)

The girl who played the Annie Potts character's daughter was good friends with my younger sister. They made all sorts of special arrangements for her to get credit through a high school in Louisiana from a tutor in California. I have watched the show a few times for this reason. I've never heard of anyone else watching it, yet the show ran for something like five years.

Show runs on Lifetime in the afternoons weekdays, which is how I came to hear about it.

Great seasoned, veteran actors.
The show was pretty good too.

I never heard of it either. It sounds like the kind of show I might have liked, but would have had to fight to watch because
  1. My husband would think it was too earnest
  2. It would interfere with one of the zillions of toons my son likes to watch.
    [/list=1]
But what came into my mind was this country song that they had in the jukebox when I was working at a small bar in Texas.

Any day now, when your restless eyes meet someone else/to my sad surprise/then my wild beautiful bird, you will have gone...any day now...

I forget who recorded it. I want to say Dr. Hook, but hell, it's been 20 years--I could be wrong.

They use that song in the opening credits. Its been recorded by about a million different artists (including Luthor Vandross, Elvis Presly, and Ronnie Mislap) - must be public domain or something- pretty song. Sad though when you listen to the words.

Any day now I will hear you say
Goodbye my love
You'll be on your way
Then my wild beautiful bird
You will have flown
Any day now I’ll be all alone
Oh, oh, oh

Any day now, when your restless eyes
Meet someone new
To my sad surprise
Then the blue shadow will fall all over town
Any day now
Love will let me down
Oh, oh, oh

I know I shouldn't want to keep you
If you don't want to stay, yeah
Until you've gone forever
I'll be holding on for dear life
Holding you this way
Begging you to stay

Any day now
When the clock strikes go
You'll call it off
Then my tears will flow
Then the blue shadow will fall all over town
Any day now
Love will let me down
Oh, oh, oh

Oh, any day now
Oh, oh, oh
Oh, any day now
Don't fly away my beautiful bird

Don't fly away my beautiful bird

The part in blue is used for the show- refering I believe to the friendship that the two woman had, but then lost with there big fight, and their lives taking them in different directions.

1. It's subtler than it sounds. It comes on at 4 on lifetime here in MI. Maybe hubby would be at work?

2. Tell your son to go outside or do his homework, lol. If he's too young, you could always schedule his nap for around that time:)

Thanks. I remembered it less well than I thought I had. After all, It had been over 20 years since I'd listened to it all the time. And the version in the juke box probably was Ronnie Milsap.

I think you remembered it pretty well considering, lol.

Pretty song. Good show.

The first episode was on today. (The pilot) If you've already seen the show, it's nothing you don't already know, but it's very touching. ANd the girls seem soooo young. Almost like babies, even though the one girl is shopping for a bra!

The show doesn't try to be politically correct. The white girl smokes (a lot) she met her friend when she was trying to steal a pack of cigarettes from the store and nearly got caught. The two women often disagree on important issues-- and they don't always reach a resolution. To me, the issues they face are just a backdrop to their freindship- not the other way around.

There are lots of characters, and they are not all good or evil. There's the 'bad' uncle who is in the KKK, but even he they manage to give a shred of humanity (though not much) The main characters have serious flaws- such as one who is bossy and pushy, one who drinks too much and who tries to avoid conflict at any cost, ect. People have a hard time accepting each others choices- even people they love. I think it's very real.

I really liked that show. I hated it though when they grew the girls up a little bit in the flashbacks and changed who played them. The younger M.E. was much better, IMHO.

I don't think that I saw every show, but I watched quite a few of them.
