Today my son got his driver's license. Later that day, he was supposed to go to a Youth Dinner (he's active in the youth group at our church) and since he had his Real Driver's License, he had to take one of our cars and go by himself...

Yes, today my little boy went driving off by himself for the firest time.
There are some people who getall verklempt when their kids go to school for the first time, and I've never really been like that, but that doesn't mean I don't note other milestones and get pensive about them.

One was when my daughter turned 14...I reflected that you just go bopping along, living your life from day to day, and then you look up and realize that you've got a 14YO daughter...

And now she's engaged. Or sort of engaged. I'm trying not to go all Mrs. Bennett about it.

And then there was the day I looked at my son and saw that he had become what in some times and in some cultures would be termed a man, and not only that, he had become someone that other females might see as hot...

And today he went off driving by himself. The car we've designated for him has some electrical problems and is in the shop, but in another week he'll be able to take himself to school. In another year he'll be in college, or preparing for it. He'll be deciding what he wants to do for a living, which for a lot of us is what will put food on the table and gas in the car, and will provide health insurance, so that he will be able to afford to do what he likes doing.

He's a homebody right now, but one day, the nest will be empty.

I know it's around the corner and time goes fast, but don't pack him off yet. ;) Does make you reflect though.

My son gets his license in October. He gets my old car and I get a new one. Win-win. He'll be on the go and is looking forward to the freedom.

Buckle up and safe driving. :)

I kinda like the empty nester thing. Now if I can just get them off of the payroll...

I can remember when my daughter started driving.

My wife was a nervous wreck.

I had taught her and I wasn't worried.

Plus that old bomb she was in was built like a tank. :D

Hang in there Mom. And the empty nest ain't all bad either. ;)

I'm not too worried, as he is not the kind of person who is likely to indulge in jackass behavior. I also don't see him leaving the nest any time soon. But I know it's going to happen someday.

It gets worse. My son is scuba diving on the weekends and taking flying lessons during the week. He just did his first solo flight a week ago.

Of course -- he's going to want to show off his piloting ability to his parents. Yikes!

Sounds like he's very goal oriented, and adventurous.

You're doing something right.

How old is he?

He's 24 -- both my kids have been more or less or a straight line since they were toddles -- unlike their father whose life has been more of a random walk.

We did bring them up to be fearless -- now we're paying the price.

This time last year my youngest daughter would get onto the monkey bars, hang and promptly scream at the top of her lungs for help. Just a few short weeks ago, I saw her getting on the monkey bars. I started getting up to go do the usual help when she flew across the rungs like a bird in flight. "When did you learn that?" "I practiced really hard..."

Crap, she's growing up and I'm getting old...
