I just arrived. Mom is on the phone with the nurse. They say it's over except for the closing...

My step-dad went in for what was to be a fairly routine heart cath yesterday, but things were anything but routine. They slapped him in to ICU and told him if he left the hospital he could be dead before morning.

The verdict? Double by-pass, to be scheduled as quickly as possible.

He's been in since 2. Mom has had a steady stream of family and friends to keep her company while she waits. They said it was critical. They said they couldn't get him to the table fast enough.

Now they're finished--a full two hours faster than they thought. They're closing now, telling us that everything went really well. Mom is breathing easier. Now she gets to drive him to distraction again with her constant, insane peculiarities. We'll know more once they get him to recovery, but they're pretty hopeful.

Sweet,

I'm sorry to hear this but from what you have said things look to be going well. Keep us appraised of his situation.

Hugs, Molly. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. :rose::kiss:

Thanks, everyone. The surgeon is here now, telling us all about everything. No problems. Pops is closed with several tubes, but it all went well.

I just visited Pops. Tubes, wires, IV's--very similar to what SSS saw with her husband. Pops looked fighting mad aobut the tube in his throat, but he was alert and kept trying to talk to me.

I'm out of here for now. Check in later.

That's good. And know that our hopes/wishes/prayers are with you and yours while you wait things out...:rose::rose::kiss::heart:

Seems to be going as well as can be expected. :rose:

Hey, lady -

So glad to hear things went well. :rose:

What a horrible and frightening situation for all of you. I'm so glad he decided to get his symptoms checked and that they realized his situation and decided to operate.

Take care of your mom, she's probably in need of serious sleep, as are you, too.

Damn. Is there something in the water, or what?

Love and strength to you - all of you.

:rose:

Take care, Molly. Good news about your step-dad. He'll be just fine.

Thanks, Sarah. I thought of you often today.

Pops should probably have the vent out by now. They said he'd be in recovery all night, but that they'd have him on his feet before morning. My mother was a bit shocked to hear this, but after watching your thread and all that your husband went through, I expected it. He was fortunate. They managed to get him through the surgery without using the bypass machine, so there was less trauma. He's expected to recover quickly.

Thank you, everyone for sitting with me all night. I appreciate it.

Glad they were able to catch it before he had a heart attack. :rose: They did with my Dad too.

They said it was a matter of days before it was going to happen. He had three major blockages. From the pictures I saw, it's a wonder his heart was functioning at all.
