Anonymous Comments

Hey,

I have anonymous comments turned off for my stories, but every couple of weeks I still get one from an anon and it is invariably vitriol. I just shrug and delete them, but has anyone else seen this?

A glitch on the anon on/off switch, maybe?

I'll never have the issue, as my anons are permanently engaged. Some of my most intelligent commentary has been anon, I can't see myself ever turning them off.

Anon comments are good. They don't expect anything from you and are free to say exactly their heartfelt opinion. Good feedback, really.

Frankly, what I hate is are the comments in dead languages like ancient Aramaic. You gotta worry when that shit starts happening.

You know? This might be the oddest forum in the world that can sometimes maintain a conceptual train of thought. I pitty readers who might come here looking for some insight on their favorite jack-off story. It would be like walking into a mental meat grinder.

I turned off Anonymous comments, but that was because there were a couple of hateful ones that called for the genocide of indigenous peoples and black people. My wall is no place for that sort of tiny-brained crap, and I won't give them the chance, even if it means losing good comments and illiterate flames.

I'll just do without, because denying them the chance to spread hate is more important to me. Anyone else taking credit for me turning them off is a damned fool.

Sorry it's happening to you, dude. And sorry about the anon comments that squeak through. Just delete them. The hate will burn up the trolls from the inside, I just hope we don't see them on the news one day.

I was about to post and ask how you deal with negative comments, but just seeing this post and knowing others receive them too has actually made me feel so much better.

Good to know there is an option to turn anonymous comments off but fuck it. I will just roll with them. Bad publicity is still publicity and I like the comment about impassioned readers. I seem to have attracted a few of those too.

I think if you receive a bad comment it should be compulsory to post it so we can all get a laugh, because that's what it deserves. Don't keep it to yourself and let it get to you. 'story sucks and the writer is sick,' yah it's probably true, but whatever!

The only anon comments I receive are from the guy who was cheeky enough to claim the anonymous ID. There are several in the database of users.

In my view, anonymous comments bring out the absolute worst of humanity on the internet. That's certainly what I've seen from the anons on my stories, which is why I turn it off. People hide behind their anonymity and just pour out hatred.

Same guy posted again this morning. I went into my profile and switched on anonymous comments, then back on again. Hopefully that toggled the setting.

I did a quick survey of my stories. About half of the comments on my stories are anonymous. Some are negative, and on average anonymous comments are more negative than non-anonymous comments, but most of the anonymous comments I get are positive. I get so few comments in general that I wouldn't think of turning off the ability of people to comment anonymously. If I dislike a comment I always have the option of deleting it.

I've received some critical (and flammable) Anonymous comments, but a high percentage of the positive comments I've received have been from Anonymous posters. My "Geek Pride" story for example, one of which was "My favorite of the event! I would like to see more of this world."

I'd love to know who that was since I've just posted a sequel and would love to let he/she/it/they/them know directly.

I've not considered turning off Anonymous comments as if I did that I'd get almost no comments. I of course reserve the right to change this, but I hope it won't come to that.

So far, most of my anonymous comments have been pretty positive too. Of course with only one story here that's hardly a big enough sample size to make any conclusions, and I guess I haven't attracted any personal trolls yet. Still, like others have said, not all anons are bad. A lot of people are just too lazy to make an account, or to log in just to comment if they have one. That doesn't necessarily mean they're trolls by definition, although I agree that the rudest and least constructive comments I've seen on other stories are generally by anonymous users indeed.
