Semantics aside, it's the reality of living in any metropolitan city right now, not just New York.

And all Uber is, is a car (and helicopter) service made for smartphone accessibility. Even car services that existed waaaaaay before Uber changed the game never called themselves taxis.

Maybe people you hang out with would think that but most people I know barely know what uber is and it's a good bet none of them have ever used it and I would hope they wouldn't think less of a person for using terminology they don't use themselves.
You call a car to pick you up they'd say you called a taxi. Mostly because you did.
Uber might be really big in large cities but it's practically non-existant in a lot of places or is so unreliable as to be essentially worthless.
