So, I've been a fan/boy of anime and manga since I was a kid, and would go so far as to say I'm an Otaku. Super geek. Always-conceal-the-full-extent-in-front-of-others kinda thing. There are even tattoos...

I've become completely obsessed and engrossed by One Piece. I can't hold it in anymore, it is one of the best stories I've ever come across in anu form! Does anyone else share this passion?!

The writing, character development, action, comedy, pathos, Cocoalas, perverted robots in pants! I love it all.

Anybody know of any similar series' which might excite my childish brain?

Thanks :)

Spongebob Squarepants. Normally I'd advise against it but if you can survive the brain damage caused by One Piece then you are beyond human.

Colours and shapes man..just colours and shapes..

I watch japanese copies with subtitles but I hear there was a american dubbing of OP for some kids network which spoiled the story and that loads was censored in the U.S. That might make it more spongeboby. I can't handle spongebob, it's like watching ren & stimpy but more painful.

I 4kids edits but usually it's watchable (unless it's a high blood story) and except in extreme cases I'm not big on sub-titles. I'm only watching Naruto that way because no channel carries it in my area and they are taking too fucking long to release the DVDs.

Ah thats the one, I usually watch kaisukosubs versions and they explain the japanese a lot for certain key words in place of trying to just translate it in to english, I reckon it helps get much more from the story.

I haven't seen naruto before but it gets mentioned with OP a lot, isn't there more than one series though? I wouldn't know where to start.

You'd start with Naruto. You may want to get a guide so you can skip the filler, the filler can get REALLY bad. Like I don't know how much anime you watch but if you think the filler is bad in Bleach you ain't seen shit yet.

I'll occasionally give in but I don't like to read my cartoons. Death Note was hard enough to follow when I did understand everything that was said, first anime that made me go find the Manga because I did need a flow chart to explain some of the bullshit they pulled in that story.

The Death Note manga is a sweet read thou :)

Mephistopheles7 :

As Sean said, start with Naruto (with a non-filler guide).

If you have any interest in manga (aside from One Piece) I can see if I can find a recommended list I posted ages ago on another site.

EDIT: I suddenly remembered the site I posted it on, so here is a small selection of manga that might be of interest, there should be something for just about anyone in it :)

EDIT2: Hmm, the links don't work here, I will have to figure out why, but that will have to wait for tomorrow :)

I have heard this about Bleach. One Piece is ok as the action pretty much never ends for more than an episode or two and the only real filler are the holiday special episodes, which can easily be avoided. I've poked at toriko and elven lied, both are ok but lack the engagement of OP. I want to be drawn into the world, not just watch the main character do their thing.

Honestly if you can stomach the cutesy I'd tell you to go watch Digimon Xros wars. That's quite the world and a damn solid team and dynamic they built on that one. You'll be a little lost in the final stretch if you aren't a long time fan but it's okay confusing. You'll still go "man that was sweet" but you won't have the same leaping out of your seat you had the first time you were reading Ironman and he was getting his ass kicked and suddenly a red, white and blue shield came flying out of no where.

Cheers for the attempt though, there were a lot of asterisks and no joy. I use Cdisplay to read marvel/dc comics, is this similar?

Yeah not much can touch good old marvel really. Xmen shaped me. God bless the days of blue and gold teams, days of lore they were. :p
Batman:The Animated Series was pretty good as I recall, but I can't keep reliving those days, must move forward!

Naruto rocks.

Inuyasha is much better in my opinion.

Okay, the moment when Supes and Bats first meet. It's epic even if you don't know who they both are but if you do it's just better. That's how the final arc of Xros wars is, it's just ten episodes of "Remember me? I was one bad mamajama *tenyearsago*"

Death Note is a must, subbed, dubbed, read, whatever. Do not skip under any circumstances.

I really don't like Kagome. I don't even know why but I spend every episode of that show going c'mon, kill that bitch! It's worse than Yuyu Hakasho, where my biggest problem is the voice actress who does Genkai is Frieza and she's not trying to change her voice and Genkai is such a bitch I really imagine that's exactly how Frieza would be if he was 50% less evil.

Kagome is what we romance readers label TSTL.

Too stupid to live

There are lots of people who are too stupid to live that I manage to tolerate though. Something about her really just hits that special note.

Yet another vote for Naruto, whats Inuyasha though?

And also another for Death Note, looks like a shortlist is developing..

My poor girlfriend has no idea how many hours I spend watching anime or reading comics, as far as she's concerned I am 'asleep'. At least I don't have an xbox. :)

Dragon Ball Z is the one I always recommend, even though people hate it for its ridiculous padding. It's too much fun! Also Tenchi Muyo, because it's fairly anarchic.

Hey I liked yu yu hakasho! Also like inuysha. Never got into naruto. One of my all time favorites is rurouni kenshin. So what if it was meant for girls...
