I angst occasionally about my H's, too, but figure, hey, I can't please all of the people all of the time. And sometimes when I see what's reigning at the top of the Top Lists, I get frightened and don't WANT to please those kinds of people

Try writing a few poems. The numbers reading and commenting are usually pretty low so recognition through votes is much rarer. So much so that most poets value comment by the better poets well ahead of votes - which maybe is not a bad idea with respect to stories as well.
