Andromeda Lost (closed)

"This is my last run. I promised Raymond I would return and start that family we want and I intend to keep that promise."

"I know Sheena, and I know the pain that we all share right now, I was going to, I AM going to get married next spring, we WILL beat this fucking thing. Oh dear, I am sorry, excuse my swearing please."

She looked sad, which was about par for the course, I thought perversely, considering we might all soon be dead. I placed my hand son her shoulders, admiring her red hair, and looking into her green eyes.

"Trust me Sheena, I, and the rest of the team, we will do everything possible to get us all out of this. And if you need a shoulder to cry on, or just someone to listen, then just say so, I will be here for you."

I am not sure if it was sentiment, or foolishness, but I kissed the top of her head, and hugged her before continuing.

"Do you remember me asking about the transponder signal? I was wondering, could we interrupt it, so it does what you just did, an SOS call?"

She thought about it as he was holding her and said, "I can't change the signal itself, but I may be able to rig it to change the signal frequency. Right now its set to every five seconds. I may be able to change it to where it quiets for thirty seconds every two minutes. That would get their attention because they would think the transponder is failing and when they don't get a response from us they will come looking."

However, the strain of the situation was getting to her and she began to cry on his shoulder.

I could see the excellent logic in her reasoning, a faulty, or intermittent transponder would cause questions to be raised. Then she started to cry, he rhead on my shoulder, and she shook as she sobbed.

"Het, her SHeena, it will be fine, I promise you, we will beat this thing, we will, or if we dont will die trying."

I laughed a little at my joke, trying to calm her, but in reality, I knew that she needed to cry. To get the pain out of her system, if only to make her fully focussed on getting a result.

I heldher close, looking at her, and I kissed her eyes, whispering.

She smiled weakly, and seemed to get herself together a little. I looked around, this room had always beena mystery to me, I was fine on the bridge, understood everything. But in here it was all relays, and modules, and screens, even some holograms I had been told.

"What we need Sheena, is a surefire way of attracting their attention, I am hopeful that Emma and Daniel find something, anything, to allow us to make a scene, of you get my drift."

I was also hoping that my words might even redirect Sheena`s attention to the task at hand.

"It is OK, I won`t let anything happen to you Sheena, I truly won`t"

Sheena felt his hug was a bit more personal than it should be, but at that moment it felt good to be held by someone while she cried. She needed the release because she was extremely upset at the moment.

After she had calmed down she headed to where the transponder was located on the bridge followed by the captain. She opened up the panel and quickly went to work changing the transponder signal. Working on the item she got the frequency of the signal changed.

While she was working she thought about the last time with Raymond and hoped that was not going to be the last time they had sex together.

She hoped that someone would hear either their SOS or their 'faulty' transponder.

Emma stepped inside and waited for Daniel. Once he got there she follow in his footsteps. She know how to fly and work the controls of a space craft. Looking for cargo crates wasn't really her thing at all. Neither Dale or Daniel had lied about how warm it was in there. She was glad that she only had her t-shirt and not the jacket.

"It sure is warm here." She say, just to get rid of the silence.

She follow him closely and watch where she put down her feet. She would hate to trip over some wire or even worse, a rat. If there was any rats there. With a sigh she realise that she miss being in the drivers seat.

"Where is that crate?" She mutter behind Daniels back.

Daniel Marconi

"Where is that crate?"

Daniel was sure that Emma didn't want him to hear that so he just peeked at her over his shoulder. The shadows from the emergency lights cast a myriad of shadows across her face that made it look even more attractive.

"Almost there"

Daniel stopped in front of the crate marked Z2, Emma bumped into him and he wrapped his arm around her to prevent her from falling, he flashed her his best smile

"Sorry about that Emma, it comes from working alone down here, you just stop and go as you please"

When he is sure that she had regained her balance he let her go and went to work with the crowbar to break the seals, he looked over at her again

"Would I be too nosy if I asked who you wrote your letters to?"

Emma was paying to much attention to the ground and had no time to react when Daniel abrubtly stopped. She bump in to him and almost fall back. Thankfully Daniel show more reflexes than her and hold her upright. For a moment her body is held close against his. He won't let her go until she regain her balance and Emma mumble a thanks.

"Quite alright." She say in respons to his apology.

It is just then that she realise that he stopped because he found the crate they where looking for. When he use the crowbar on the crate Emma decide to answer his question. She still feel a little bad about being so snappy toward him earlier.

"My mom and sister." She smile faintly as she know that she would probably never see either of them again. "My sister Karin is a dreaming of space. I just hope that if she get the letter. That this won't change that."

I could sense Sheena`s hurt, and knew instinctively that she very worried that we might no make it, as I released her. I figured that we needed something to break the tension, so I sat, and patted the seat next to me.
I did not want to talk about our current problem, nor about family, so I came up with what I hoped, was the next best option.

"I wanted to go into space as soon as I was weaned according to my Mom, but tell me Sheena, how come you are a spacewoman?"

I had to smiel at that term, as it sounded so ancient now.

Sheena was surprised at his question, but she knew he was just trying to make small talk.

"Ever since I was little, I've always wanted to be out here among the stars. And I felt that way until recently, when I met and married Raymond. This entire trip I just wanted to get back home to him to start our family. I have no intention of dying now. I have to keep my faith that I will be reunited with him soon."

The conversation was going in the wrong direction, the last thing I wanted her to do was to talk about her family life, and what she would be losing.

Then I noticed something, which had been bugging me for a while, it was getting hotter, and I was not sure why.

"Something else is wrong here Sheena, it is getting hotter, and I am beginning to feel very uncomfortable in this uniform. Come with me, to the bridge, and we can check the internal systems, to see if there is a fault."

I slipped off my jacket, and carried it over my arm as we walked.

"That is all we need if the aircon is fucked, Jesus Christ Almighty!"

Realising that I was raising my voice, I calmed down, and spoke quietly to her.

"Well Sheena, if it is faulty, at least you are an engineer."

Sheena was surprised that he was saying that there was something wrong with the environmental controls. She hadn't noticed any change in temperature but she followed him to the bridge.

Once they got to the bridge, she looked over the systems, and replied, "There's nothing wrong Captain. It is actually the only thing around here that is working right. Besides, if it was faulty with everything going on right now, it would be getting colder in here, not warmer."

She was probably correct, but I just let it bem and asked Helen, our computer for a status report.

"We are still on a collision course with the Earth satellite moon, we are slowly falling into the gravitational pull of the satellite, and this mission will terminate in 22 hours and 58 minutes. We are emitting signals, but cannot ascertain if they are being received, dure to the lack of external communication capabilty.
I am p[rogrammed to self destruct upon your command Commander Dale Lorkoski, shall I do so now?"

"No Helen, we will not do that, not ever. You will go to sleep, until I call you, do it now."

"Yes Sir,"

I walked up to Sheena, and took hold of her, hugging her body to mine, I had no idea why, it just felt right.

"Damn this thing Sheena, just let me hold you, I want to hold a woman again before I die, to feel her soft body against mine."

Sheena let him hold her, but she started to cry again. "I want to go home Daniel. I have to believe that someone is hearing our signals and are coming to rescue us.'

Holding him she thought about how good it felt to be held by him. She did her best to control her feelings, but when she looked up at him she had the sudden urge to kiss him, which scared her.

Even with the hydrolic assistance it was tough going to break open the seals on the crate, pretty soon Daniel started to feel a bit uncomfortably hot. By now he would have been stripped to the waist, but Emma's presence stops him, as he continues to struggle he thinks about Emma's reply, at least she had somebody to write to.

"I think that if she has a dream to come up here..."

Finally the seal gave and Daniel took a deep breath, before going to work on the next one

"then I'm sure you wrote her a letter that would...inspire her to become just as great as you"

The crowbar slipped and Daniel suppressed a swearword, irritated he zipped open his coveralls and tightened the belt at his waist. Emma is a big girl, she would have seen a half naked...hell she would have seen a naked man by now. Even though he didn't feel much better, the restriction of the damp clothing was gone, he picked up the crowbar again and flashed a grin at Emma

"This sucker is going to open up even if it doesn't want to"

With that Daniel went to work on the second seal again

"You know Emma, I envy you. You have somebody to write to...I have nobody. My parents died in a robbery...my sister, well she blames me for their death because I was busy studying...and the rest of the family...well they just wrote me off as a lost cause, because I didn't want to go into the...family business"

The seal gave and Daniel stood there holding the crowbar and breathing deeply

"I don't have anybody who even gives a rat's ass about me"

He sat the crowbar aside and opened the crate, pulling a flashlight from his utility belt, he looked into the crate and started laughing when he saw the food rations they were transporting

"Well at least we won't die of hunger"

He rested his arms on the side of the crate and looked at Emma

"We would most probably have to make an inventory about this stuff"

He kept his tone light, he didn't want her to feel sorry for him like most people would when they hear something like that in the situation they're in

"I want to go home Daniel. I have to believe that someone is hearing our signals and are coming to rescue us.'

She looked up at me, her sorrowful face beutiful, even in the harsh lights of the bridge. In a way it was a defining moment, I felt it, inside, should I kiss her?

Instead of kissing her lips, I kissed her forehead, and spoke gently.

"Yes Sheena, I too want to go home, but I also have to be realistic. The chances currently are not great, and the odds are certainly not in our favor. But I wish to say something, and please, do not take offence. I feel an empathy for you, we are alike in some ways. We both have someone to return to, we both love our jobs, and being out in space. I am trying to find the right words here Sheena......
If, God forbid, the worst comes to the worst, ir the situation becomes so bad that there is no chance of, well you know. Will you come to me Sheena? And let me hold you like this, so that we can at least comfort each other?"

Sheena replied, "If I can, I will. I will make no promises. I simply don't know how I'll feel when the time comes."

She wasn't being evasive, she was being truthful. She always made it home alive. This was the first time that the possibility that they might not was a real possibility, but she belieed that all would work out in the end.

She loooked at the Captain and said, "I'm going back down to communications and look into ways to try and see if we can rig up some voice communications. I need to keep busy."

She left the bridge and headed back down to work on establishing communications.
