With that settled, I should advise to advance your story more than twenty-five years into the future (2030) as originally suggested. Unless your story is to illustrate the initial clash between society and the newly-available technology, twenty-five years is hardly enough time. The technology might be ready by 2030 but society will probably take longer. Minds are slower to change than technology.
Yeah, since I initially started planning this story, I've decided that it probably needs to be set at an unspecified time several hundred years into the future.
Thanks for the definitions--given the speed at which new terms are coined, it's very unlikely at some distant point in the future that words like androids and robots are still in heavy usage, so I might just invent my own terminology for whatever sort of technology I eventually decide on for the artificial life forms.
A big thanks to everyone who's participated in the thread and contributed ideas! I now have many good ideas for my story, and I'm going to have to narrow things down a bit.
