Durham always struck me as someone who wouldn't shit can his apparently solid reputation just to appease Trump. I'm guessing he only agreed to do the investigation as a professional courtesy to the current AG.

It's quite likely that Barr used Durham as a red herring to placate Trump and distract from his own malfeasance as AG.
