And I thought it was bad to be gay in the U.S.

Ugandan 'gay' name list condemned

Last month the Red Pepper paper printed 45 first names and professions or areas of work of alleged homosexual men.

HRW says the move could foreshadow a government crackdown in the country, where homosexuality is illegal.

But an editor at the paper told the BBC that it was not a witchhunt and that no man on the list was identifiable.

'Tolerant'

"It's one of the interesting things for people to read in a tabloid because in African societies homosexuality is still seen as strange," a Red Pepper editor, who asked not to be named, told the BBC News website.

For years, President Yoweri Museveni's government routinely threatens and vilifies lesbians and gays

"We've also printed a list of cheats - people unfaithful to their partners - also with first names etc, because people like reading about other people's vices," the editor said.

"We don't want to expose them (homosexuals) to the government and the police has never contacted us to investigate the list. This country is very very tolerant."

But HRW says the gay and lesbian community in Uganda has long been stigmatised and harassed by the government.

"For years, President Yoweri Museveni's government routinely threatens and vilifies lesbians and gays, and subjects sexual rights activists to harassment," said HRW's Jessica Stern.

"At a moment when sensational publicity has spread fear among a whole community, the authorities must exercise their responsibility to protect, not persecute."

The editor dismissed these fears: "People are not going to attack you or arrest you - I don't remember anybody being prosecuted in courts of law because someone's gay or lesbian."

However, he admitted that people were paranoid about having their names printed in the paper.

"People are calling here (the paper) to make sure their names are not named; others are calling and cursing us."

He said the paper was considering publishing the names of lesbians, but a decision had not yet been taken.

vella_ms location the love shack.

this saddens me to no end.

The African and Asian nations have been making public statements for years, that homosexuality is a western deviancy, and that they don't have any such thing in their community.

Of course not.

it saddens me also. when will people get to stop fighting to justify who they are? i mean, honestly...i hope i live to see the day. unfortunately, i'm not so optimistic that day will ever come.

There are also the problem in some African countries that men who have AIDS believe in the myth that they'll get cured if they have sex with a virgin - and so they kidnap little girls from schools.

A lot of schools have put up fences around their schools to protect the girls.

Every time I think humanity can't get any worse, we hit a new low.

Well just to put things into perspective, not half a century ago, homosexuality (and even things like lefthandedness) was considered a mental disorder in most western countries too. One that was illegal to display in public and that should be forcibly cured.

So, in the words of Piet Hein:

Put up in a place
where it's easy to see
the cryptic admonishment
T. T. T.

When you feel how depressingly
slowly you climb,
it's well to remember that
Things Take Time.

Y'know, maybe someone should give you folks a reality check.

The United States of America is a diverse and pluralistic society. True?

It is said we have more 'Jews' than Israel, more Africans than any nation outside Africa itself, the largest Japanese and Chinese population of any nation outside the home nation of those peoples and that, I would guess, might apply to many other nationalities and ethnic minorities around the world.

America truly is the 'melting pot', an amalgation of the world. It is one of the things that has made and makes the US, truly unique in the modern world.

And while it is the basic nature of the American people to accept diversity and be tolerant of differences, we do not kindly accept those who would attempt to 'change' the basic structure of our society.

Homosexuals are more intrusive than Jehovah's Witnesses, who go from door to door proseletizing their belief and we yet tolerate them and the Holy Rollers and the Budhist offshoots of Hari Krishna, America is a tolerant nation accepting and welcoming to all from all part of the world and from all beliefs that do not violate human or civil rights.

If you watch the news you will be aware of the Mormon sects that practice Polygamy. I has gone on for far more than half a century, but when flaunted and when flagrant affronts are made...reaction occurs.

Although you will not hear my words, listen to the voice of America that in the last election, rejected gay marriage laws and will again and again. This nation will accept and be tolerant of differing views, but will not be ruled by them.

If you have any moral sense and values at all, live your life and enjoy it in privacy, do not impose your world view on others and you will live in peace.

Go door to door and seduce Holllywood to do your bidding and petition the courts to enforce your will and I assure you, you will think you are in an African, third world country environment much sooner than you think.

The only sick, perverted fuck trying to force his lifestyle on anyone is you, friend.

Look you sick little perverted puke of a man, I once replied to a post of yours stating that I wouldn't fight a drunk who couldn't defend himself, I was referring to you on an intellectual level.

You claim infirmity and seem proud to be a ward of the state unable to work or support yourself and moan that you haven't been with a woman in a decade and the wimps on this forum sympathize with you and pat you on the head like a nice puppy.

I am not a wimp, you are a weak pathetic asshole who should not have access to a keyboard, you have nothing worthwhile to say to anyone at anytime or in any place and as you have publically stated, would be better off dead.

I agree.

And remind yourself...you came after me, I would have preferred to let you rot.

And there, dear friends, you have the voice of reason, tolerance, understanding and fine intellect.

Not.

this is NOT a thread about gay marriage. this is NOT a thread about asking you to accept me.
this is a thread about being singled out and publically thrashed without supporting evidence in a newspaper. its wrong. what is also wrong is bringing in other issues that are not being touted in this thread.
