After digesting an ad here by BN65, which offered a kind of private confessional, I realized how much of a treasure confessions can entail, really. Both for the person who gets to make a confession, and in various ways also to the confession taker.
And in many ways, aren’t personal ads laced with confessions galore?
Anyone like me who posts an ad seeking this or that, admits a deficit or two, first of all. And then he confesses how he proposes the deficits be compensated for. But only when he is very lucky, will a woman write back, who feels similar deficits. And when they are luckier still, they get together and actually begin compensating them.
Now doesn’t it seem strange that an invention of the Catholic Church – of all institutions in the world – turns out to be such an attractive instrument for making many people feel better?
If I come right down to the nitty gritty, I seek absolution from a dear woman for sins of this or the other nature. Combined with a confession of her own, which makes it a moot point, who of the two of us is the most severe sinner.
OK then, in this particular spirit, I offer to every dear woman sinner – both to take her honest confession, AND to absolve her from her principal sins. Every one of them, too. Especially the sins you have committed out of passion. Or, what would really be sad and forgivable, out of longing for passion.
