And he wonders why the military doesn't respect him.

President Obama returned a formal military salute by saluting with a coffee cup he had in his hand as he stepped off his U.S. Marine Corps helicopter in New York on Sunday.

A video of the gesture that some are calling the “latte salute” was uploaded to the White House Instagram account.

“President Obama just landed in New York for #UNGA2014,” the caption reads.

The salute is “the most important of all military courtesies,” says a manual, titled “Customs and Courtesies,” for Marine Corps officer candidates, The Daily Caller reported.

Amazing celebrity genetic defect?? Don't leave us hanging, man.

I can't see; does he have something in his other hand?

One of those things that would require you to think ahead.

What's the protocol if you find yourself saluted and your hands are full? Put it down? Hand the cup to the guy, then return the salute? Seems odd that he would have to carry his coffee. wouldn't there be coffee where he was going?

Presidents seldom returned salutes prior to Reagan's staff market-testing the idea and discovering it made for great optics.

Video shows nothing in his other hand.

And the most media savvy President ever with, we are told, the highest IQ ever didn't either forgo the salute or do it right because__________?

Traditions change over time, but it seems better to err on the side of respect. The soldier standing post I am sure appreciates it when he does return the salute, whatever the soldiers politics are.

Presidents don't have to shake hands and pose for photos, but it makes a nice impression.

You have bet duty to treat the wait staff at your favorite eatery with anything greater than polite but dismissive courtesy; engaging them on a human level gets you better service.

I think this barely warrants a mention but it is weird how you can find an excuse for absolutely anything he might do.

I'll be happy to praise the president that decides to stop returning salutes.

It's been a while since I brought this up here, so to repeat myself: literally the only people here who have ever called Obama the "smartest president ever" are the ones that can't stand him. You're countering an argument no one is making.

1, isn't non-military types saluting a bit... weird.
2, half acknowledging a formal greeting from his troops, with coffee, is rude.
3, why do people expect world leaders to be smart and polite? puppets are only as good as the puppeteer.

That's why Reagan was so adored. He never forgot his lines or missed a cue.

Less all lose our minds over something so trivial as a lack of decorum.
There's plenty more we can all lose our shit about in this fucked up world don't ya think?

The conservative mindset dictates that Optics Are Everything.

Hence, "Mission Accomplished".

When we're at war, you don't salute your CO. Anyone who saw Forrest Gump knows that.

Outrage: Now the USoA's leading manufactured product.
To bad there's already a glut of it on the global markets, it's hardly worth making anymore. Hell, we could probably import it cheaper from India.

Because, as I'm sure we all agree, respect should be based upon empty gestures and pointless symbolism.

Doesn't matter. Obama is snakebit, its obvious to the world; I cant imagine him redeeming himself at this late date.
