went off course...

Or did it?

Along with the opportunist attack on Baghdad an A-10 Tank Buster managed to shoot up two offices belonging to Gulf news agencies...

"Cameraman killed as al-Jazeera office bombed

An al-Jazeera cameraman has died and another of the Arabic-language news channel's journalists is missing after a coalition bombing raid hit its Baghdad office.

The office of another Arabic news network, Abu Dhabi TV, wa also hit, according to reports on the BBC and al-Jazeera.

Al-Jazeera cameraman Tareq Ayoub died from injuries sustained in the attack, the channel announced today."

Just because they report the news with a different slant on it is no reason to try and destroy them...

Or is this a foretaste of the America of tomorrow?

Don't agree with them?

Order them dead.

Just like the protesters back home in the States fired on with 'rubber bullets'...

News Agencies Attacked

*Keeps mouth shut because I may not be informed enough but does have something I could say*

A report attributed to Kuwaiti TV says...

The deceased al-jazeera reporter was standing next to an active anti-aircraft artillery emplacement when it was bombed.

One word...

Duck!

The journalists are running around like flies around a turd, they were bound to get swatted soon or later.
It is standard policy not to target journalists, but if they're in a building with the enemy shooting, it is a viable target. Duh!

Ok, thats what I was going to say but wasn't sure of the policies involved.

OK that takes care of that one but...

what about Abu Dhabi TV. That was a building not a reporter and it certainly wasn't standing near the target or 'running around like flies round a turd'?

The tank crew..

Reported taking fire from snipers and RPGs, and saw people moving on the roof of the Palestine Hotel. They saw an observation/spotter team with binoculars and RPG on the roof, and fired in response to the fire. CENTCOM is telling the reporters to hang white sheets out of the hotel where they are staying.
Oopsies!

This isn't a soccer game, people are going to get hurt if they're in the battle zone.

BTW- 4 embedded reporters have died in combat on the "other" side of the front.

The official Iraq website is down.

If you're going to report from a war zone, you have to expect that you will be in danger. Of course they could all waltz across the river and join up with the non-existant invisible americans that the Iraqi Information Minister keeps claiming they have crushed. :p

Officially...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INITIAL RELEASE: REPORTS OF ATTACK ON AL JAZEERA

CAMP AS SAYLIYAH, Qatar – US Central Command is investigating reports that an Al Jazeera news team may have been injured during hostilities in Baghdad.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Central Command has repeatedly warned media representatives that Baghdad would be a dangerous place to be if the Coalition engaged the Iraqi regime in combat.

Coalition forces target only legitimate military targets and go to great lengths to minimize civilian casualties and damage to civilian facilities.

Well, Kuwaiti TV got it wrong or someone is misquoting them. "Tareq Ayub", a correspondent for the Qatar-based al-Jazeera satellite television station, died of his injuries following a US missile strike on the station's Baghdad offices, the Arabic news channel reported. A US missile hit the Baghdad offices of Al-Jazeera television early on Tuesday killing the cameraman and leaving a correspondent missing.

The station aired footage of the cameraman being taking away for treatment in a car belonging to rival network Abu Dhabi television.

As to;

Well, so what? Being a war-journalist has never been advertised as safe, but getting a top story in a decent sized war can make a career sky-rocket. I think they're a little mad, but the money must be worth it.

Of course, the A-10 pilot might've just figured, "Why not give those damn journalists something to write about?"

A US tank fired upon the Palestine Hotel....it doesn't look at all accidental.

On News24;
http://www.news24.com/News24/World/Iraq/0,6119,2-10-1460_1344772,00.html

Baghdad - Footage filmed by France 3 television of a strike on a hotel which killed two journalists in Baghdad Tuesday shows a US tank targeting the journalists' hotel and waiting at least two minutes before firing...

"It was not a case of instinctive firing," said Herve de Ploeg, the journalist and film editor on contract with the French channel who filmed the attack.

The firing took place at 11:59, said France 3 reporter Caroline Sinz.

"I'm very specific because I was due to go on air," she explained.

The incident killed a cameraman for the Telecinco Spanish television station and another for the British news agency Reuters. Three Reuters staffers were also wounded.

The Spanish cameraman was named as Jose Couso, 37. The Reuters cameraman was named as Ukrainian Taras Protsyuk, 35.

I guess they don't like freedom of the press in the US military.
