Nope, this isn't a thread about my own personal misfortunes.

Has anyone heard of this series of books?

They're fabulous; I'm on book four now.

The author is Lemony Snicket.

They'd be in the children's section, I believe, and they're quite dark and lovely all at once. Great writing style.

hmmmmm, I'll have to check them out.

The author's name is amusing. My nephew, calls me Aunt Lemony. <smile> I heart that.

hey draaahbaby<stern monkey>

I've seen them and considered them as gifts for my granddaughter. They were a bit above her reading level last time I considered them, but they should be worth another look now.

How old is she, Harold?

They are wonderful to read to a child, but they are rather dark.

Nothing gory or violent, rather the same villian continually hunts three siblings (for their fortune) who are very, very clever.

He writes in a very original way, helping to explain bigger words to young children and with disclaimers all over the book, stating, "If you are looking for a story with a happy ending, put this book down now!"

My middle son has read several of them. He didn't think he'd like them at first but that changed after he read a bit more of them.

That's exactly what happened to me. I found the first one depressing, as I and most of us are used to happy endings.

However, as a reader you begin to look forward to their next adventure and feel connected to the kid's characters.

Saint Peter-there are a few pictures; perhaps you have an elementary school-age child in your home that could read you them at bedtime? Good luck!

No can do. Only have a few cats and a big dumb yellow dog. Fuck it. I will stick with my Barney video collection. At least can sing along with the songs.

9 1/2 -- a Third Grader reading (now) at fifth to sixth grade levels.

I did worry about the "no happy endings" disclaimer also. She was in first grade (reading at third grade level) when I considered them. I think they're rated at Fifth grade level when I looked them up.

I'll have to check with her and see if she's interested in them.

I know of them through Interviews with the author on NPR's "Fresh Air".

The pen name is a twist of sorts on Jimminy Crickett. The author is basically the antithesis of him. The books are a sort of PollyAnna parody. Or a Dickens oppressed orphan parody.

Kids that are old enough to understand that life isn't fair tend to get the humor.

I don't even know what the covers look like.

Love that series. I listened to the second on tape while commuting.

It was read by Tim Curry which was excellent.
His Uncle Monty was a priceless deformation of His Nigel Thornberry.

*is considering getting the unauthorized autobiog. of Lemony Snicket*

On the shelf of my Barnes and Noble next to the books of the series. Looks like a dark hoot.

Literary trivia........

Did you know that Lemony Snicket also writes great erotica as Daniel Handler?

Bump for information.......

Titles "Watch your Mouth"
"Basic Eight"

also recommend Charles Baxter"s "The feast of Love" and any of Nichloson Baker"s books, "Vox" in particular.

Thanks for the info., I'll have to check out his erotica.

Also, if anyone is looking for his books by title, I messed up. The title is "A Series of Unfortunate Events," and not the reverse as I posted in the thread title!

Excellent fare for the Edward Gorey fan, and for anyone who has a secret dread of the name "Olaf."
