An Unexpected Cargo (OOC and Casting Call)

Name: Benjamin Lawrence

Age: 28

Gender:
Male

Race: Human

Description:
Ben does not stand out physically in any way. He is fairly average in height - about 5'11, average weight as well. He as always enjoyed spending his life somewhat anonymously. Whiel he has risen in ranks throughout his life, he has done so not by being cruel and overbearing, but instead by trying to be friendly to people. It is his belief that people will isten and follow orders better if they are asked to do something instead of ordered to do it, so he attempts to be friendly with any crew he is on.

History:

Ben managed to advance through the ranks in the military rather quickly. He had managed to impress some of the higher-ups in the military with his quick thinking and amiable personality. However, he found the life of a military officer to be far too confining. Deciding he instead wanted to be out on his own, he chose to become a freelancer, offering his services as an officer, and occassionally a pilot if need be. Taking this job, he was glad to be in a position of power once again, happy to have a crew working underneath him. His life had been lacking purpose recently, and he hoped this new job would change that.

((This is all off the top of my head and can be edited if it doesn't work))

Me being the technician and Thanatos the engineer is fine with me if Thanatos is fine with it. I'll work on a bio to post here tomorrow.

sounds good with me, I think, a hands on mech type would best fit my character, will poet a ruff bio today.

If there's still a spot open in this thread I'd love to step in. I'm thinking a scientist/medic type who, perhaps, has a screw loose or two.

I think we have everyone we need now DJ, but thanks for showing interest. There may be more opportunities later in the thread for more players, we shall likely be stopping at a couple of space stations and trading ports before the end of the journey, and I am sure the good captain is not above a bit of people and contraband smuggling if the price is right. Nice little earner to suppplement his meagre wages so long as the company doesn't find out ;)

Hawkeye and magbeam, your characters both look great to me, you're good to go. :) I've already started writing the opening post, when all bios are submitted I shall post it up. Should be ready in a couple of days at most.

Excellent on both points, I am very glad to hear it and eager to begin. :)

Enter the navigator

I may have gotten a teensy bit carried away with the backstory here...

Mitchell Kysantreth

Gender: Male
Race: Human (variant)
Age: 24

History: #76G_V12 was ‘born’ from the clone vats of the developed asteroid MX-23R57 in the Pelioxous system. A fluke against all the careful genetic programming, he didn’t conform to the format of the ideal worker drone. Possessing neither brute strength, nor blind obedience, was marked for destruction at the age of six. Fortunately, he was already a genius and managed to make his escape in a shuttlecraft with his friend #124E_V12. Despite hot pursuit, the two boys made it into free space, just long enough to be picked up by a Peloxian slave vessel which was passing by. Impressed with their daring escape, the captain agreed to give them sanctuary in return for 15 years of service. If they refused, she would return them to the asteroid.

They agreed, and became a part of the crew. The captain gave them their new names, Mitchell and Ryson. Within a year of the agreement, Mitchell had learned the basics of the ship and some elementary computer programming. There was some friction between the two boys because Ryson had a lot of difficulty learning the things which Mitchell picked up with ease. Nonetheless, the captain smoothed things over between them, and came to care for both children. On a port call on the planet of Xylmarti, outside the Peloxious system, Mitchell hacked into the ship’s systems, intending to cut the contract short. He discovered that that the captain had bought both boys from the cloning facility in order to forestall pursuit and had made out papers adopting them as her own, giving them her name of Kysantreth. Needless to say, the escape was aborted.

As he grew older, Mitchell devoured any and all data recordings he could get his hands on, becoming particularly interested in the fields of astrometry and cosmic manifold theory. By the time he was 19, he had mastered multi-phased geometry and hyper-topology on his own. Ryson had surpassed his genetic destiny and surprised everyone with his instinctual knack for hydroponics and space gardening. The two young men became lovers. In fact, Mitch had difficulty in social interactions with anyone other than Ryson and the captain. In the interest of a more stable existence for her family, the captain had signed on as chief of security on a large military cargo ship, the Cavalcade. Unfortunately, this was to be the end of happy family life for Mitchell.

The Cavalcade was attacked by a pirate vessel, well armed and extremely deadly. Both Kysantreth and Ryson died in that battle when the pirates boarded. Mitchell was taken prisoner, the only one. He went mad in his desire for revenge. It took him 3 days to disable the locking mechanism on his cell, using the circuits within the holographic timepiece which the pirates had been foolish enough not to confiscate. That night, he managed to steal an air recycler and managed to make his way into the bulkheads in the hull. From there, he hacked into the ship’s computer. For the next two weeks, horror stalked the pirates as life support failed, consoles overloaded, food was poisoned and random pieces of equipment attacked in the middle of the night. By the end, not one remained alive. Found drifting in the empty ghost of the pirate ship nearly a month after the initial attack, the wild-eyed young man was taken into the custody of the allied planet Terra.

After two years of extensive psychiatric treatment and evaluation, he was released and enrolled in the course for navigators at the academy. He took his time and breezed through his courses. He made a small number of friends, mostly women, and though he had many of the usual sexual dalliances with them, it never developed into a lasting romance. Upon graduating, he applied for a job with Icarus Interstellar Haulage and was assigned to the Matheson.

Personality: Wary of new people, Mitch tends to keep a very small circle of very close friends. He is interested in almost any topic of intellectual conversation, but his deepest passion is for the complex and convoluted mathematics involved in jump calculations. He keeps in touch, when possible, with Kayla, his closest friend and longest fling from the academy. He has also developed the hobby of hydroponic gardening, in memory of his dead love.

Physical Description: Mitch stands 5’9” in his stocking feet. He has a lean build, thin but not gaunt. His hands are extremely dexterous, but he can be somewhat uncoordinated in other respects. His hair is jet black, short and straight. His eyes are mismatched; one is deep blue, the other a light turquoise.

Equipment: A few sets of moderately sober and practical non-regulation clothes, a miniature computer/input pad, several audio chips of ancient classical music, a miniaturized hydroponic ecosystem (~1lb, self-contained). Many data chips of advanced physics, computing and mathematics.

Name: John Smith

Age: 48

Gender: Male

Race: Human

Description:

John Stands 6’2”, He has a muscular build. He has several tattoos, mostly of skulls and ancient mythical dragons. He has long brown hair he keeps tied in a ponytail. His eyes are brown and hard. John doesn’t stick to company coverall unless he has to; he is usually wearing black t-shirts and cargo style pants. He is quite, but once he gets to know someone they are friends for life. When it comes to work, he is matriculate and can be a bit of a perfectionist.

History:

John, some believe that is not his real name, spent many years in the military as a close quarter combat specialist. After the military he was a free lance mercenary. He stumbled on being an engineer by chance, helping a friend with a “problem”. John had always liked working with his hands, even when he was a boy; he would take thing apart just to see how they worked.

Let me know if this ok, I can tweak as you see fit.

First post up, I hope my suggestions as to the design of the hypersleep modules and them being in the nude weren't too presumptuous. Always wondered why they didn't do it that way in Alien, to be honest...

Everything looks fine with your posts, but we're making a slight alteration. I'd appreciate it everyone NPCed Sal from now on, it makes Maid's position a little difficult if all the PCs are talking at her and she has to reply to every single one of them, so it's probably better if everyone plays Sal as an NPC, Maid will not be playing her.

I just wanted to let you all know that my posting will be a bit sporatic over the next few days probably. I am moving into an apartment tomorrow (technically today) and so things will be all over the place

Mine will be too. I expect to still be able to log on once per day, but multiple postings are unlikely right at the moment. (Various administrative-type deadlines and things.)

Mine too, wrapping up some end-of-year things and then going on a short trip, visiting several battlefields for research purposes.

Lovely stuff. When Hawkeye has posted I'll post and have the captain brief the crew on their new mission.

Just sounding a rollcall to see if Thanatos and Brit are still onboard. I don't know how you want to work this, I usually stick to a posting-order in my threads, but if you guys are waiting for me to post I'll go ahead tonight, Zeus willing! ;) Internet is fixed so I should be good to go now, fingers crossed.

I am till here, apologies for not posting but have had a week of madness but will try to get a post up tonight after Eurovision (then again, maybe not... ;) ) if not then definitely tomorrow morning...
If you post first no worries, not sure what Charlie would say/do in response to the news yet anyway... :)

Yeah no worries brit. You don't have to post if you don't want to, I'll go ahead and post later today/tomorrow morning regardless.

Question:

Hey Maius, as I'm playing the navigator, there's some things about your universe that I'd like to know:
1) How much can the players bend the science/geography to our own concepts? (Obviously not planning to contradict anything already up there)
2) I'm assuming that hyperspace does not necessarily imply that the crew is in stasis. Is that OK?
3) How long should a typical trip to Epsilon Pegasi take? Ballpark estimate would be fine and I know that for the purposes of an interesting story, this trip may be atypical.
4) I'm assuming hyperspace travel to be of superluminal effective velocity (We arrive faster than light would, basically by cheating physics) but not necessarily instantaneous. Is that allright?
5) Do jumps have some maximum length?
6) Do jumps have some maximum frequency?
7) What's powering the ship? Should we just make something up or have you settled on some variant of warp-core notion?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is my first time in this type of story and I'm not sure about the etiquette of setting down things which affect the other characters.

sorry about being slow to post, had to go on a fast trip, my sis had a heart attack. will try to get on down here again soon I hope.
