The sweeps affect (nominally at least) all stories.I see. I have never entered a contest. So, I'm going to imagine that would have little to do with me. However, your thoughts may be viable. Thank you for answering.
Thank you kindly. The sweeps affect (nominally at least) all stories.
One of mine dropped 10% of its votes and rose from 4.4 to 4.6.I've noticed the ratings on one of my stories. 226 rating has dropped to 220. What would cause this please? Just asking. Thanks

And high scores with the same purpose.Laurel does periodic sweeps with the goal to eliminate low scores used to manipulate contests.

thank you so much. And high scores with the same purpose.
My contest entry lost three votes and jumped from 4.38 to 4.69. I'll leave to speculate what those votes might've been.
I've had them affect mine, and I have never entered a contest. The sweeps affect (nominally at least) all stories.
This is most interesting. I was not aware that such things happened.I've had them affect mine, and I have never entered a contest.
That is reprehensible. Honestly, I have read so many stories here. Both good and bad. I've never felt the need or desire to sabotage someone's efforts. Rather, I tend to enjoy, leave positive feedback when I think it applicable. Putting oneself out there is scary enough without others hampering your efforts. I don't believe I've ever "bombed" a story. Even if I didn't like it much. As a teacher, I saw much of this type of "jr. high" behavior. Sadly, it continues with some into adulthood. Or perhaps I just crazy. hahahaha. There are multiple reasons for 1-bombing (the Authors Hangout term for trying to sabotage a story by downvoting it). In my case, a few of my stories had reached the toplist. Apparently someone decided they shouldn't be there.

Well said. Thank youOne-bombing is a fact of life here. There is a certain life form, Trollus nosfingerus, generally found in dark corners and littered basements, which one-bombs stories: (a) which in their opinion are too good, (b) are written by authors they don't like, (c) contain subjects they don't approve of, (d) are doing well in contests, (e) use British vs American spelling ('-our' vs 'or' ), (e) use Yank vs Brit spelling, (f) contain the letter 'c', etc
To make at least some effort to combat them (arsenic being illegal and mothballs too expensive), the site does 'sweeps', which comb out suspicious votes, both high and low. These happen periodically, but always just before contest results are announced. One may also ask the site for a special sweep if one thinks one is being one-bombed.
Authors are discouraged from speculating on how sweeps work as that might give the trolls ideas.
