Buy Chinese.
The article is written from a Western perspective and the imposition of this demand will certainly have an impact on the bottom line of many Western firms. But I read this with a different POV.
China is rushing towards a total surveillance state. They make the West look like second rate pikers in that respect. Cameras and facial recognition everywhere, social media and search engine firewalls, and "Social Scoring" to determine if a citizen can travel or make certain purchases.
If you recall a year or so ago computers manufactured in China were found to have bogus chip embedded that allowed their government to bypass any software firewall protects and gain access to any computer with that chip installed. While the announcement certainly is couched in terms of economic retaliation could it be that this serves a much larger purpose by allowing the Chinese government to make sure that every computer in their nation has an equivalent chip installed? That would certainly fall into line with all of the other surveillance programs they have mandated.
China has ordered that all foreign computer equipment and software be removed from government offices and public institutions within three years, the Financial Times reports.
