An egg toss...

This whole thread reminds me of the closet exchange in th movie Wierd Science. It's been a few years since I've seen the film, but the party they threw got crazy when their attempt to make another Kelly LeBrock Computer Genie went haywire. They did what any reasonable geeks would do in that moment; they hid in the closet. I don't remember for sure which order they spoke in, so if I'm wrong, bear with me:

Wyatt: Gary, do you feel like a chicken right now?

Gary: Wyatt, if I could shoot an egg out my ass right now, I would...
I been out of the closet for years.... hee hee

I missed Wierd Science. I'll check Netflix later.

Correct me if I'm wrong here Shankie, and please do forgive me if I'm stepping out of my place here, but I think the issue that dear Shank is so desperately tip toeing around is that these boards have seem to become a place where any one who doesn't post here regularly, and hasn't earned rights so to speak are flamed from first post if that post is not accepted as genuin. Okay, now I'll agree some times the threads started here seem more like some one just trying to stir up some trouble, but insted of just letting the thread die, we feed it with lots of bashing, and all around be littling of that poster. Now, maybe I am just nieve, but I've also seen a lot of threads that seemed like a legit call for help turn into a weenie roast of sorts. I think we could all do with a lot less of that energy. I mean, if you think a person is a fake just trying for attion here, why not just call them a fake and be done with it, insted of carrying on for three pages on how this person would never servive a session with so and so or what have you?

but that's just my thoughts, and every one is of course free to express their openion. I just think some times it could be done in a less hateful mannor.

That would be fairly typical board behavior no matter what the Theme. Be it basket weaving or bdsm. Certainly all boards aren't that way, but plenty of them are.

Shakara's initial post reminded me of the intro to "Art of War"

"All warfare is based on deception.

Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near."

Not responding may very well be the best response.

Suppose for a minute that our initial reaction is to let it slide. To deceive the enemy should we not then lash out instead?

Do the rules change during leap year? What about Sadie Hawkins day?

once again, point taken

I think, in review, I was attempting to suggest something for those few moments here when someone posts something that gets anger started. I see people do egg-not-catching a lot with mini-hijacks, they just let them be.

Agreed. I do think also that while some find fault with caution being used here and particular people being seen to be less than real (aka trolls) from early postings, they also may not be aware of how some of us have been burned at times by people we trusted, and also that at least 2 people I can think of who were trusted regular posters over many months/years, then turned around and out of the blue (no provocation, but a planned set up from the first day) told the community they really were not who they appeared to be and basically announced their opinion was we here all need help.

My thoughts are anyone who would post in a manner which seemed legitimate, made friends with lots on the board, and continued posting regularly for a long period of time like that with the intent to ultimately do what they have, are the ones who need help....that aside, it does make some of us more cautious and distrustful of Joe Blow who comes in unnanounced and makes what seems like a less than serious or pointless post, often on the same day they have registered...most of us lurked quite awhile before posting or starting threads, so that and history, does encourage behaviour and caution we may not exhibit elsewhere under normal circumstances.

Consider the source

My motto is to consider the source of the post. When someone is new, and joins Lit to post provocatively, I generally ignore them unless it amuses me to join in.

I am here to share knowledge and to share a laugh or two. I see no reason to join in debates that really no one can win. If the debates become heated, well that is human nature isn't it?

It still doesn't change my world or my world view. To each his or her own.

I didn't mean to imply that this is the only board that did such things, and please forgive me if I had. I do realize that other boards, here as well as other sites do the same thing. Just as this was posted in the bdsm boards, and as of late I've noticed it coming out a lot more, may be why my post sounded like I was picking on the posters here.

Another take on 'troll' threads...........

I know best policy is not to 'feed the trolls'. I have seen some brilliant definate troll threads crop up here for example Basemint Slavery and more recently the thread that promoted the ever useful Pop Tart Lube. It interests me that these threads get such a distinct and ongoing response and I am going to suggest they work for the Board Community in a very useful manner.

They become a sort of safety valve. People blow off steam usually , bond a bit more and have a good laugh. We all have our tics that I am sure can get on the nerves of others ( not me of course....tries to keep a straight face). I honestly think the troll threads work positively for us in this manner.

I would also like to point out that if a thread is started and the person appears sincere I have seen many of the Community take time out if they feel they can assist and offer genuine advise. We don't disqualify peoples posts for lack of knowledge of BDSM and D/s or because they haven't run their questions through spell check prior to posting . The main things that cause alert for trolls as I see it disgenuous content and affronting mannerisms.

Whether thats fair game or not isn't a huge issue to me. They have right of reply .

I really don't like trolls, particularly ones that are just firing insult after insult. As a result of one specific troll I spend more time lurking anymore. I have seen some productive trolls like rebecca has mentioned. Ones that seemed to help liven up the board and bring a bit of good laughter when it's been needed.

Speaking of productive trolls who could resist this little gem ( extra special serial troll , okay the spelling was pure EVIL in this one but the content was the precedent )

I cried tears of laughter over the replies of others over this one :rose:

I have seen people get away with a lot in RL because other people thought it was more polite to not "catch the egg." So the perpetrators continued with their rotten behavior because no one would say anything to them or take a stand. It's not polite to take a stand. It's messy sometimes. When all this dawned on me, I started speaking up if it wouldn't cost me an account or anything, because someone, IMO needed to. I try to do it very nicely and in the best way possible but I tend to speak up now in RL. In conclusion, sometimes I catch an egg and sometimes I walk away. Usually I limit my egg catching in any one debate or discussion to a certain number. If an accord or understanding is still not reached I decide to let go and move on. I have other things to do, always. LOL.

For me it is important for my own emotional well being that I know I can choose which eggs I want to catch and when, and thrown by whom.

I have often responded and reacted out of habit, in a negative place, only to play a part in taking a personal interaction down to an argument - no longer a discussion.

Keeping myself aware that I can choose how to deal with an egg while it is still in midair is much better for my own well being.

This continues to be a helpful thread for me. Thanks everyone.

I am tired of eggs in general. I am FF's age which means I am really really old and I don't have time for BS. When you get our age you realize that the clock is ticking. After all, we are just a few birthdays away from AARP membership.

Catching or dropping, I am tired of both of them.

and the joke is, dear Sister Rebecca, is that they, the AARP, is for people over 50 and about 2 years before that benchmark birthday virtually everyone in the U.S. of A. starts receiving letters soliciting their membership.
