So, earlier today I was perusing a message board called "Where Were You On September 11?"

A woman posted claiming to have been in Boston on that morning waiting for her flight, when suddenly she got sick and decided she'd take the train instead. The flight she passed up on, she said, was Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania.

After she got a couple of response posts of sympathy, I decided to end her charade and prove to the assembled posters that she was a fraud. Flight 93 departed from Newark on 9/11/01, not Boston.

I still can't understand how someone would be so insensitive and callous as to lie about something so reverent and so important to so many people, but it's not like I haven't seen it before.

And what did I get for my troubles? A wonderful e-mail from the woman whose plot I foiled:

See it only takes one asshole . . . to get online and make a scene and you have took that position. I don't care what you say or what you think. This is still . . . a program on your computer! SO, you need to do something with your life and get off this SOFTWARE! Silly ass! I know where I was and I know what happened to me so go jack off like you normally do you freaking perv!
Ah. No good deed goes unpunished. The thread she created and I responded to was deleted, so evidently I made a pretty good argument that she was bullshitting us.

I mean, if you're going to lie, at least do a better job. I didn't even have to look at a fact sheet to know that Flight 93 took off from Newark, not Boston (both the Boston departures hit the World Trade Center).

And plus, if you're sick and fear taking a plane, a train is not much improvement; it rocks and lurches, so you stand just as good a chance ralphing while riding the rails as you do in the air.

But what do I know? I'm just a silly ass and an asshole . . .

I would be willing to bet that she's not the only imposter on message boards all over the place. Seems a sick and twisted way to get attention though.

had our fair share here, too. i can't remember any details, as they were just too petty for me to bother to remember, but others can probably tell you quite a bit.

I like your thread title. :D

Some people will do anything for attention. But you're right, at least get the facts right if you're going to try to bullshit thousands of people. That error of flight origination was fairly obvious.
