The day hadn't felt right from the beginning. Brian was not superstitious, but the signs had been obvious. He'd put on blue socks with his black suit, dropped a pot of coffee in the lounge and finally, jinxed a new car sale by holding back a rebate. In his eyes, he'd lost reputation and commission before 10 am. Brian Wheeler allowed his mind to go one last place, the worst possible place - in a flash it happened 'what else could go wrong today?' Not only did the thought creep into his mind, he had uttered the phrase out loud. Brian was no small fellow, he carried his weight well, looked like a retired lineman. Some called him Brian the bear, a reference to his size, and perhaps one or two who wondered if Brian might also be gay. He didn't talk to many women at work, did not share his personal sagas. He'd always been fond of the receptionist Penni, loved the way she spelled her name with an 'I'. She was a demure redhead with a sexy, calm voice that could soothe an irate customer or a screaming child. She had an odd habit of twisting her hair around her finger when she was idle, something that made Brian smile everytime he saw it. She was a slight woman, not overly thin, more a runners body. Her calves flexed admirably, as she answered a call.
Neither really spoke much to the other, whether out of introversion or lack of interest in him, Penni kept to herself in the same manner that Brian spent his days, quiet and solitary.
This all changed as Brian watched the front of the new car dealership explode into shards and webs of glass. Time slowed as his eyes discounted the reality of a vehicle pushing it's way into the building at a rapid rate. Brian watched in horror as the vehicle hit an interior pillar and the rear of the car swung around and crushed the receptionist counter. Where was Penni? He rushed ahead, unaware of the pillar as it fell.
