Precisely. The longstanding U.S. policy, through administration of both parties, has been to use everyone else's oil before we use our own. Our suppliers are trying to make up for the demand shortage of the past year and a half, and it will all equal out--on the individual consumer as well, who has been consuming far last gas because the Trump administration failed to do much of anything useful (other than preordering of vaccine that his dummy supporters won't take) to keep COVID at bay and people on the roads.

That isn't a bad policy if you are in a position to afford it. That is exactly what I would do with my resources even if it was slightly more expensive than using my own. Its better to have left overs if the shit hits the fan than have to go begging people who may be your enemy or they may not have enough to sell and keep their countries going.

To the rest of your point you are spot on. I don't know how anybody didn't predict that this was going to happen the moment people started going out. A lot of people were working from home. Under ideal circumstances would stay that way indefinitely. There are plenty of jobs that don't require the individual to be on site, certainly not five days a week. I've never had a job where all of HR was needed every day. You could send one in for emergency, must happen now stuff then have the full come in once a week to handle stuff that can wait.

Most essential workers live relatively close to where they work. My warehouse job and was close enough that I barely noticed the increase in gas prices. When you gas up once a month not once a week it doesn't matter what the price is.

Opening up combined with people who'd frankly had enough of staying home was gonna do this. I know a lot of people who are family oriented who hadn't seen their extended family in over a year and didn't care if they took a chance. Most of the travel bans ended.

And the truth is that they can handle higher prices now in waiting for the market to smooth out. They are putting back in some of the money they saved by not driving much the last two years. My two-year-old car has 2,500 miles on it, all in just three trips to see family plus quarterly drives up to the mountains to pick up my periodic wine club allotment. I went to my daughter's for Thanksgiving. Gassed up the car before I left and saw that the last time I got gas was August 1st, coming back from my last visit to my daughter's. I wasn't spending money on gas all that time. I'm not going to be behind in spending for gas by driving now.
