Shepton Mallett prison Somerset UK closed yesterday after 400 years. It was notorious as the place where 16 American soldiers were executed in the Second World War. 14 were hanged and 2 shot. They included 1 Native American and most of the remainder were mainly black and committed for murder and rape. White prisoners were generally sent back to the USA for trial.

It was later established that a number of men committed for rape were falsely accused by women who did not want to admit a consensual relationship with a black soldier. Not a happy history.

It was also the location of HMP Marston Tyne in the film "the Dirty Dozen".
