For those of you who have been following the politics here, I'm sure it has taken on a surreal nature in many ways. Since 2002 I have used the terms Venceremos! now and again, and commented that the united American people shall not be defeated. Many people see American politics as a clash between Democrat and Republican -- Left versus Right if you prefer. But in the final analysis it has always been, and forever will be a struggle between the people on one side and the government on the other. That's how it was planned and that's essentially how it turned out.

Saul Alinsky was basically correct: Community organizer activities take complacent and apathetic folks and politicize them locally, usually through amplification and exacerbation of dissatisfaction, division, and derision. People who normally just shrugged off politics as usual were "mobilized" to take a more personal "can-do" approach to things. Those who never talked about politics suddenly find their voice. Inarticulate and unsophisticated political expression is valuable not only for whatever content it may express, but for the mere fact that it is participation.

Fools like Obama were taught and believe that all populist mobilization is, by its very construction, Left or Socialist leaning. All that Alinsky told them was correct -- the people can be radicalized, mobilized, energized, and convinced to become participants in the national discussion. But what plays well in inner-city Chicago takes on a different nature when performed at the national level. What you get is not an energized cadre of left-thinking activists. Nope. What you get is the TEA Party.
