America is only a nation-state

The USA is a constitutional federal republic, but that is not of its essence. A nation is not its political constitution. France has had five monarchies, five republics and a fascist dictatorship, but through it all France remains France. America is no different in kind -- an ordinary nation-state like France, not an idea-state like the Soviet Union. A monarchical or theocratic or Communist America would remain America.

If you ever hear anybody say, "That's not what this country is about!" or words to that effect, point and laugh. No nation has any "foundational values."
