Ambiguous feedback & comments controls

Comments and Feedback are used interchangeably in the controls for authors and they do confuse (me).

I wanted to adjust the comments at the end of a story following some hate speech. I was able to delete the comment with no problem, but I'd like to be able to stop future anonymous story comments.

It's helpful that there's an option to Y/N anonymous feedback, but why not Y/N to anonymous story comments?

Then there's the Warning

'If you choose "NO" to the above option, unregistered users will not be able to comment on your submissions, and users will be forced to give an email address when contacting you via your profile and/or submissions. Accepting anonymous feedback greatly increases the amount of feedback you will get on submissions, because many readers choose not register for the site.'

...like I'm having a finger wagged at me. Besides, the warning above refers to Comments, not Feedback - so which is it? Maybe change comments to make observations?

Why would an author want to stop hateful emails ( via feedback ) but be happy for shitty comments at the end of a story from anonymous posters? I can delete a shit email in a blink. I'm not even notified of Story comments unless I check every day.

Overall I'd give the controls 3/5. The site has Y/N for feedback emails but none for Story comments and is skewed in favour of anonymous posters.

It actually refers to both, it would require registered users leaving a comment to your story with their username and that people that give you feedback - which will be delivered by mail - to give (an unchecked) email address. So, non-members won't be able to leave a comment to your story, but may still sent private feedback. Is that what you're looking for?

Hey thanks for responding - much appreciated, but I'm still a bit confused!

I'll see if I can tabulate this somehow and maybe it'll become clearer in doing so..

"Feedback"
  • Arrives by email
  • Can be sent from the author's profile Contact page ( may or may not have options, but I think not )
  • Can be sent from the Feedback panel at the end of the story ( and can turned on/off my author at any time )
  • Are private

"Comments"
  • No notification
  • Publicly viewable
  • Can be deleted through options in author controls
  • Can only be opted out at the time the story is uploaded

Having turned off Anonymous Feedback on my controls, I see the 'oage tab' Feedback has disappeared from the end of my stories whether I'm signed in or not. But people could still give feedback through my profile ( which takes a bit of finding )

But the Add a Comment 'page tab' is still there to Signed In AND Anonymous readers. Comments and Voting can only be turned off when you upload the story but apparently not changed later.

You don't get an option Y/N Comments for anonymous comments as you do with feedback.

That took a while to figure out and it's not my job!! :D

Comments are notified in your member page. They should pop up on All Activity (https://literotica.com/my/#/activity/all) and Works Activity (https://literotica.com/my/#/activity/works)

Something like

"29 has commented on your story
<story title>
<date of comment>"

That's how it is working in my profile page...
Yes, you get a notification of all Comments on your Control Panel, and you can delete them yourself.

You can turn off anonymous comments and feedback with the initial submission (as well as globally), and you can also turn voting and comments on or off any story at any time after publication - but if you do so afterwards, it blocks all new comments, both account holders and anons. I don't know if turning comments off hides all prior comments from public view - I have a feeling it might.

I know several authors who got hit by methodical trolling who temporarily turned comments and voting off for a while, then turned them back on later.

The important thing is that authors can delete hate content at any time. Also, the site runs regular hate content scans - folk report on comments disappearing all the time.

Ok... so I'll be sure to engage Microsoft Mindset when tackling this. Got it
